The rear side window louvers on our 1980 SLC are peeling and look awful. I've heard that it is so much trouble to remove them that it is not even worth doing. What do you think? If they are removed, how do you refinish them and what keeps this from happening again?
Thanks!

Are these louvers metal or plastic? Is the finish painted, chromed, natural, etc? Sorry, I am not firsthand familiar with detailing that model. With some info I'll try and help. Offhand I would recommend replacement though.

Hope this helps...Lee

First off if you have an SLC.....you have a relatively rare and in my opinion...awesome car!

When I was at Gemutlichkeit '99 this past weekend, a couple of the SLC owners were talking about this problem....I am amazed at how nasty looking those louvers get!

They were all saying it was best to have a professional restorer do the job....prices were being quoted at around $400.00. I'm not sure if that is each or for both.

You could check the 107 SL/SLC parts magizines out there like Adsit, Precision, and Impco. Also try the ads in the back of the MBCA club magazine: The Star.

That is one detailing job I've never tackled either.

Good luck to you!
Mike

Just a wild thought...if they are metal, why not check with Rennsport (link at bottom of screen) to see if they could refinish them?

Best of Luck...Lee
