We have a scratch about two feet long, one eighth inch wide and through the first layer of paint. It does not appear to be as deep as the metal. There is no metal denting or creasing. Is there a way to repair this scratch without repainting the entire door?

Yes, but it requires a lot of skill. You might try posting in detailing. Lee and company will have some good info for you..

Paint-free dent removal is a huge industry. Service providers are often franchised. Names like Dent Dr. I believe are nationwide.
I had a couple of dents similar to yours (NOT QUITE AS LONG)... I priced the repair at the place the previous owner had used for body repairs: $1,800 + 5 days. I took it to my regular (upscale)shop: $800 + 3 days. Both said painting was essential.
I took a chance: $200 ($100 per panel) + an hour while I waited... at the local detailing hand car wash, where the guy makes a weekly visit.
It came out great. I saved lots of money; I saved lots of time... I don't know if a pro body shop would be remarkably better... matching 15 year old paint? RESULTS WEREN'T PERFECT... and I bet they can be pretty ugly in some cases - but mine worked out fine.
