View Full Version : Mercedes in the movies
AucklandGuy 01-11-2001, 07:06 PM I've just watched the John Frankenheimer movie Ronin on DVD, and was delighted to see Jean Reno and Robert De Niro careering around the south of France in what appears to be a 450SEL 6.9. (The car that prompted Spencer King, then chief engineer of British Leyland, to say, "If there is a way to make something more complicated, the engineers at Daimler-Benz will find it.")
The 'reverse burn-out' shown in the movie when Reno steps on the gas to back out of a parking space is particularly memorable!
I also seem to remember a Merc in the Cannonball movies - which brings me to ask, does anyone know of any other screen gems featuring our favourite marque?
rickjordan 01-11-2001, 08:46 PM I don't remember a Mercedes in the Cannonball movies. You may be thinking of "The Gumball Rally"(1976). In that movie there was a goregous black W115 or W116 at the beginning of the movie and then there was the 300SL roadster that was in the race it'self. BTW Ronin was a great movie. Some serious chase scenes with very nice cars, BMW 7 series, Audi A8, and of course that W116. I don't remember for sure, but I think the color of that MB was the same as my car.
500sec 01-11-2001, 09:26 PM Our company just rented a black 560SEC.Out to paramount for an upcoming Spike Lee movie. Also rented them my dad's Jaguar for the same movie
420SEL 01-11-2001, 11:10 PM Mercedes have been shown in the James Bond movies more than any other make of car. They are usually driven by the bad guys. Also, Lucy Lui drove a 300SL in Charlie's Angles. What a combination. One hot car and one hot lady.
AucklandGuy 01-11-2001, 11:41 PM I've just found an interesting page featuring M-100 engined Mercs in the movies, with smokin' stills from Ronin, Lost Highway, Groundhog Day, The Witches of Eastwick, Trading Places, and even "10"!
Check out:
http://www.m-100.org/movies/index.html
Pbalias 01-12-2001, 01:36 AM I love Mercedes, but you have to admit that the Audi S8 (not an A8) in Ronin was kick-butt! 4.2 liter, twin turbo, all-wheel drive 4 door Audi. I'm not that huge an Audi fan but that car is awesome. Just my thoughts...
Peter
Bora20 01-12-2001, 01:41 AM Try 'Romeo Must die' with Jet Li.
Some C43 action in that one.
MarkL 01-12-2001, 03:45 AM W140 S500 in the movie "The Peacemaker." Staring George Clooney and Nicohle Kidman. some good stunts.
Ashman 01-12-2001, 05:59 AM Black 91 or pre 91 s class in that cool chase scene in lethal weapon 4.
Also Didn't they also have a benz come out of the giant shipping container in lethal weapon 2?
How about the benzes in Raiders of the lost ark? :)
I know there are more hehehe. there will always be more.
Now if only they would make a movie like "No mans land" with benzes. :) hehehe
Alon
vince 01-12-2001, 10:52 AM Sophia Loren drives a Signal Red W113 SL in "Arabesque" (political intrique movie from the sixties - she co-stars with Gregory Peck). I really enjoyed the movie (and the car - it's just like my 250SL except for the white hubcaps and left hand drive).
rickjordan 01-12-2001, 12:43 PM You're right it was a S8 not an A8, my mistake. There also was a nice W126 in Die Hard 3. Unfortunately it got the #$%! kicked out of it. I absolutely hate seeing nice cars get all smashed up like that. Of course in Mission Impossible 2 they smash up a Porsche Boxster and an Audi TT.
In 'Die Hard' the bad guys show up at the Nakatashi (or is it Nakatomi...whatever:)) towers in a silver grey W124! They also carjack an S-class in 'Die hard with a Vengeance' which ends up getting totally wrecked after some wicked driving!
bobbyv 01-12-2001, 02:31 PM i believe the BMW 5-series in Ronin was an M5. In the chase through the city streets a Porsche 911 was used as the camera car.
the amusing thing about the Ronin movie is that after all those chases in the supercars, they end up in an econo-hatchback that doesn't crash at all.
in "The Firm", Tom Cruise drives a 124 coupe (or cabrio?)
in a movie featuring Navy Seals (Charlie Sheen, if i remember), they use an old benz that they drive down some stone steps.
Bigshot 01-12-2001, 02:39 PM 240D I think in 4 seasons(Alan Alda) that falls through the ice. The new 500Sl in the Rookie w/Clint. Every Miami Vice episode,AMG galore. The Gigilo w/R. Geer. Cannonball run had a 300Sl w/flannel interior with a chevy motor in it. What about that Tales from the Darkside or Creepshow "movie" with that lady in the w126 driving through the woods(Thanks for the ride lady!). I'm stuck for now.
420SEL 01-12-2001, 04:41 PM Check out Goldfinger. When Bond tries to escape from Goldfinger's place in Switzerland he is chased by the bad guys who are all driving 50s 180 "Ponton" bodied sedans (could also have been 190s if they were 1957 model year or newer, but body was the same). One goes into a tree, another off a cliff, and the rest of them don't seem to have any trouble keeping up with the Aston Martin DB5, even with three guys hanging out the windows shooting. Blofelt's men chase Bond in a 200Sb Finback (could also be a 220Seb)in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. There is a pretty cool scene where Bond and Tracy (Dianna Riggs) are being chased in thier T-Bird by the Finback and in an attempt to loose them they drive into a smash up derby. The Benz can turn a lot tighter than the Ford and it is noticable. I just watched it and it was not a smash up derby, it was a stock car race that turned into a smash up derby after Bond showed up. The Finback performs some pretty amazing smash ups and knocks out most of the competition until Bond's car knocks it off the course and it rolls over and explodes. So much Mercedes carnage. Of course the Mercedes have to be destroyed in a pretty spectacular way to get them off Bonds back, where as the Ford just dies on them in the middle of the road.
420SEL 01-12-2001, 04:53 PM There is also a big 600 Pullman in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Bill Conroy 01-12-2001, 05:21 PM I just watched Ronin on DVD last week and listened to John Frankenheimer's audio comment track. He's a big car nut (you can tell, can't you?) and he mentioned that the 6.9 was one of his favorite cars. He also said that when DiNero had his head sticking out of the sun roof with the bazooka the car really was traveling as fast as it looks (near 100 mph). He went on to praise stunt drivers, all of whom raced LeMans or were Formula 1 drivers. Cool!
AucklandGuy 01-12-2001, 05:52 PM I've just remembered that there's a Benz in the opening sequence of "American Gigolo" too, with a superb helicopter shot of it storming along a coast road with Richard Gere at the wheel.
It's a convertible, but I don't know what model. Blondie's "Call Me" is pounding away on the soundtrack when we see the car.
yhliem 01-12-2001, 09:37 PM y'all know the chase scenes in ronin...well...fyi, the camera car was a 500E
Aaron 01-12-2001, 10:58 PM In Lost Highway, a guy named "Mr. Eddie" drives a black "1,400 hp" 6.9 and he pulls some awesome moves with it. Check it out, it's all worth it. After I first saw that movie, I ran outside and literally "spun" my 6.9 around the block. Went back the next morning to check for burnout spots. Indeed they were there!
geoellis 01-13-2001, 11:21 AM Let's not forget about the caravan of W126s that appeared in "Coming To America" for the scene when the king (James Earl Jones) came to the US to retrieve his son (Eddie Murphy)
George
patsy 01-13-2001, 07:59 PM I have to mention American Gigolo just once more, Richard Gere drove an SL, probably a '79 SL. I loved seeing him drive by the windmills on the way back to L.A from Palm Springs, and the Blondie song was very memorable.
The ultimate Mercedes in a movie to me was the white SL, that Julie Christie drives in Shampoo. I always thought it was a 1971.
CaptAlex300e 01-13-2001, 11:17 PM In some HBO movie Michael Douglas drives a CL (500 or 600?) He's a bad ass in that movie. I'm starting to think that all these movies are giving MBZ a bad rep. Maybe us MBZ owners should have a little more tough rep, huh? :)
I must see Ronin, maybe it'll be on T.V tonight, if not I'll just rent it tomorrow.
The Bad guys always drive a Benz.
moyukh 01-14-2001, 12:27 AM Well, this is kind of a movie - a couple of days ago in comparative religion class we were watching a movie about christianity in africa. One of the sections was about the dramatic arrival of an arch-bishop in some region of africa (yeah, i was paying attention!) - the narrator says "and on this momentous day catholicism arrived in ____ Africa" and the archbishop arrived in a magnificent black 123 - in the middle of class I yelled out "catholicism arrived in africa in MY car!"
Michael 01-14-2001, 12:51 AM What about Charlie Sheen and Clint Eastwood in "The Rookie"? In one scene, a bomb's about to go off in the same building as our intrepid cops, who are sitting in a '91-'92 500SL. But they're on, like, the fourth floor. So, I believe it was Clint who says "buckle up" then drives out thru the wall of the building!
They land hard, the rollbar extends, big mess. As the dust settles, an uninjured Clint turns to similarly unscathed Charlie and says "Engineered like no other car in the world". Amen Clint  :D
'55 190 SL (W121).... To Catch A Thief (Alfred Hitchcock).... Grace Kelly, Cary Grant.
vutown 01-14-2001, 05:15 AM In the movie, " Romeo Must Die", the bad guys were driving a black S-Class, which was ripped when the semi took off. It litterly took of the foundation of the car! Ouch. Is this possible?
-Happy Driving,
vutown
vinamg 01-14-2001, 06:55 AM Any of you guys watched the newer movies?
Like Gone in 60 seconds or Meet the parents.
In Gone in 60 seconds they talk about the laser cut keys for the newer Mercedes and how the cars are un-stealable. Any of you noticed that when they showed the laser cut keys they were the regular switchblade keys with the infrared keyless transmitter. I was really mad, but I guess they didn't want to confuse the audience with the real new keys that don't even look like keys. Mercedes is on top of their game. Metal keys are a thing of the past. Keyless Go is even cooler.
In Meet the parents there is a real funny scene with the new S class racing a Lincoln (I think). Even though the S class would blow it's doors off. 0 to 60 in 6.1 seconds, incredible.
Bill, you were right about John Frankenheimer being a car nut. More specifically a Mercedes nut. I read an article about him once in Star, I think. He is a Mercedes freak and he makes sure that they never even get a scratch on them during shooting. I also read that he owns many of them including a SL7.4 AMG

WmHarlow 01-14-2001, 02:16 PM What about the beauty the bad guys sunk in the lake in "Enemy of the State"?
longston 01-15-2001, 12:31 AM Personally, I was IMPRESSED with how much abuse a W126 could take. The only reasons that they abandoned it was that, A. Bruce was too much of a pussy to roll it back over. B. they needed the winch on the Dodge PU for the next scene...;)
How about Bruce Willis got his silver/black 500SL smashed up with the red Firebird? He played a psychiatrists with his patients killed one by one (killer is actually his girlfriend). Saw the movie last night on HBO, but did not catch the name.
95 R129
98 ML320
MikeTangas 01-15-2001, 02:43 AM And it looked like there was one in tonights X-file. It was briefly shown in the junkyrad scene, possibly an AMG version. New model, looked to be silver and had the old huge SL style Star in the grille.
Mike, Xfiles...you beat me too it! It was gorgeous...I wish they had shown more of it but all I caught was the front section.
MikeTangas 01-15-2001, 12:05 PM There was only one good shot of it I think, the night shot, from the front. There might have been a quick side shot in the day scene. I taped this episode for the other half, so I might FF to the scenes and try to get a digital shot of it.
Mike, if you can do that that would be great.
speedy300Dturbo 01-15-2001, 06:30 PM In "Suicide Kings" there was a nice scene involving a W126 long wheelbase. I remember one of the guys sitting in it knocked on the dash and replied "Good car." And another guy replied, "Yeah, it's Mom's." And the first guy says, "Germans, they sure know how to make em."
benzat 01-15-2001, 07:58 PM dont forget the movie road house...560 sec that was totaled at the end of the movie..(how I wish I could pick up some parts off that car)
Benzman500 01-15-2001, 08:43 PM in the movie Three Kings they use one of the w126s that looks great Suadian stole from Qwait(sorry have no idea on spelling) meat the parents was terrible with the s500 showing it loose to a lincon and have its tire spinnen. Has any one noticed almost every time The W126 is destroyed WHY WHY? they are always the nice ones wich thier are few left of.
DEPRIEST 01-15-2001, 09:09 PM Remember that movie "Witches of Eastwick" where Jack Nicholson drove that black stretched beauty with the chrome driving lights in the rain. I loved that scene when he pulls up in the thing with the rain pissing down... Bad film, great scene. I don't remember what type of MB that was. Later in that film, I think he wrecks it. I can't remember. I just remember the driving lights and the rain very well.
Grapes 01-15-2001, 09:12 PM The movie "Meet the Parent" with Ben Stiller and DeNiro has a silver S500, its a funny movie, go check it out!
MikeTangas 01-15-2001, 10:15 PM Here it is, rather grainy and not too clear. I may try the other VCR later on, on that one I can go frame by frame, maybe I'll ve able to get a cleaner shot.
http://www.pe.net/~mktangas/xfilemb.jpg
I pulled the original screen shot and replaced it with the current view. Used the frame by frame VCR and smaller TV. Should be a cleaner pic, unfortunately I could not get a clear frame showing that nice looking grille star :(.
The shot last about 2 seconds, moving in the dark.
[Edited by MikeTangas on 01-16-2001 at 01:57 AM]
420SEL 01-15-2001, 10:17 PM That was a 600 Grosser that Nicholson drove in the movie
300EVIL 01-15-2001, 10:38 PM it looks like they really like to smash up Mercedes in the movies, maybe its the only car that will keep going after a few front end colissions? or the extreme safty features?
something to think about.
tonight on TLC i watched a documentary about automotive crash rescues they used Mercedes in quite a bit as examples of safty features. there was this 190E, it looked like it was cut in half!!! obviously the guy didn,t make it.
he must have been doing around 150mph when he hit that guard!
drive safely and always put on that seat belt.
there is nothing Mercedes can do about the laws of physics yet.
adam
300EVIL 01-15-2001, 10:48 PM by the way that movie with Bruce driving that SL500
is called "color of night" great movie!
excellent car chase, this time the Mercedes wins.
that SL kicks the crap out of a supped up firebird!
What with all the interset in how much abuse MBs can take in the movies, I am surprised that there are no car magazine articles on this feature. I remember the either Road and Track or Car and Driver did a feature on the cars used in Steve McQueen's movie "Bullit", and went on at length about how all they had to do to the Charger was new tires, shocks, and brakes for the chase seen, but that the Mustang spent considerable time in a race outfit shop getting brake and suspension mods and internal structural bracing to handle the rigors of the chase. Does anyone know if a similiar article has been done on MBs in the movies, or was that a one time occurance because of Steve McQueen's racing contacts?
Grapes 01-16-2001, 12:42 AM Have you guys checked out the movie "Gone in 60 Seconds" with Nicholos Cage. They got a few MB's in the movie, along with some other hot cars.
MikeTangas 01-16-2001, 02:56 AM Yal,
I was able to get a cleaner image and simply edited the original shot.
Bigshot 01-16-2001, 12:55 PM Sharon Stone drove a 450Sl in Casino, smacked it up too.
Mike,
Nice. Its difficult getting a clear image of the TV, I've tried it several times myself. I wonder if anyone can tell what model it is. It certainly looked like an AMG.
Mr.W123 01-16-2001, 10:19 PM I loved the chase scene with the pontons in Goldfinger, those foglights made the cars look so damn good in the dark. In 'American History X' there is a W116 missing one hubcap driven by the chief bad guy. In 'The Firm' Tom Cruise is given a very nice W124 coupe. In 'Primal Fear' I think, with Ed Norton and Richard Gere, Gere has a W123 coupe. While not a film, in a police chase show I saw there was a drug dealer running from the cops in a nice beige W114 coupe. I remember thinking that was a drug dealer with class, well at least with his selection of cars.
I know the is a W109 in 'High Art' but I declined renting it because the movie looked rather unimpressive in the preview. Speaking of unimpressive there are tons of typical Hollywood action movies with the evil bad guys driving W126's and W140's.
Does anyone know of more movies with the older Benz's like the W116, W123, W114/115?
CaptAlex300e 01-17-2001, 07:32 PM On the show Sopranos, "Hesh" drives a S500, and Christopher (forgot the last name) drives a CLK 430. Tony Sopranos wife drives a E320 Wagon.
jeepguy 01-18-2001, 12:49 AM No one has mentioned anything about the movie "The exorcist"
I counted at least 2 MB's there. A early 1970s SL and at the end that sinister looking black 1973 280 SE that has forever stayed in my mind after that violent scene at the end. The re-released edition has more footage of the car slowly leaving their house. PERFECT car for that final scene
JustinMorrison 01-18-2001, 02:32 AM I just watched "St. Elmo's Fire" last night (not sure why...), Emelio Esteves was riding in the back of a black 450SEL limo, also, Demi Moore's character was picked up by her boyfriend driving a (I think) white 280SL. Bad movie, nice cars.
Justin
momentum 01-18-2001, 03:38 AM Let's not forget the nightime soap opera "Dallas" from the 80's. Jr.,Sue Ellen and Bobby ewing All drove benzes:)
CaptAlex300e 01-18-2001, 02:04 PM In some Beverly hills cop movie (forgot which one) the bad guy(s) have a SL500. Also In amny Mob movies they have mercedes-Benz. I wonder why?
dacia 01-21-2001, 12:44 AM How about Taxi. It was not released in North America but there are some nice chase scenes in it. 500E's to boot. It seems that bad guys are driving Benzes because they are associated with wealth and privilage all around the world. And according to some of the moviemakers you have to be a rather nefarious character to be able to afford one. The 3 most recognized brand names around the world (meaning anywhere in the "world") are Mercedes Benz (the three pointed star) Coca-Cola and McDonalds. It seems that any bad guy with half the brain knows to drive a Benz to look like a bad ass. Well if you can't beat them join them. :-)

engatwork 01-21-2001, 10:21 AM to everyone on here that loves cars and gets Speedvision channel on their tv. At 4 pm EST today (Sunday, Jan. 21st) Barrett-Jackson has the Scotsdale, AZ auction televised live. I posted under "GENERAL FEEDBACK" some of the cars that sold yesterday. There were a couple of really nice looking MB's sold. If you are a gearhead you will enjoy watching it. Some of you may even want to bid - try website
http://www.barrettjackson.com/events/scottsdale/default.asp
Some of them that sold yesterday:
1959 300SL went for US$170k
1927 MB K Sport tourer did not meet the reserve - high bid was US$225k.
1939 540K bid up to US$220K and did not meet the reserve
good stuff

Tony Black 01-21-2001, 11:48 AM We just rented Omen 2 (rainy day rental),Damien is escorted around in his uncle's black MB limo.
I'm not sure what the model is. You get a nice ride in it early on in the flick.
Subman 01-21-2001, 09:46 PM In the new movie Trafic (it was to long like 3 hrs) Kathren Zita Jones drives a ML 430 she has a rich husband who is a drug dealer go figure.
300EVIL 01-21-2001, 10:08 PM there is a ML320 in american beauty.
momentum 01-21-2001, 10:22 PM In the movie Analize This, theres a black 140 s class driven by robert dinero.
Looks like the Xfiles has some kind of contract or something with MB. This week it was beautiful Silver S-Class. Hmmmm I wonder what it will be next week.
CaptAlex300e 01-22-2001, 01:49 PM I posted earlier that Tony's friend (aka business associate) Christopher drives a CLK 430, and Hesh (that old Jewish guy) drives a S-Class.
MikeTangas 01-22-2001, 02:08 PM Yal,
It must have been in the beginning of the show, I missed the first 15 or so, didn't see it in the later part (and didn't tape it as the wife was watching). But I will look for one next week.
Mike,
I don't think you missed it. The scene is the one where the kid gets bullied by another kid, his Dad shows up, and they drive of in an S-class. Later you get a quick glimpse of the car in their driveway.
Come to think of it having Mercedes cars in the Xfiles isn't that far fetched, after all they have been profiling Chrysler cars for a long time ;)
p.s was that a gross episode or what:D
Cannoli 01-23-2001, 02:48 AM Richard Gere in the "Intersection" drove a late 60's early 70's SL ... "Romeo Must Die" had a C43.
momentum 01-23-2001, 03:17 AM in the end of the movie Get Carter, Sylvestor Stallone drives away in a black s class.
need2speed 01-28-2001, 08:42 AM The 1998 film Taxi by Gerard Pires featured a pair of gorgeous red 500E's with EVO II wheels. Driven by the bad guys of course...

Ashman 01-30-2001, 12:47 AM Jim Carrey drove a 500SL/SL500 in Liar Liar. :) Funny movie. :) hehe

300EVIL 01-30-2001, 01:25 AM there is a red Pullman in that crappy batman and robin movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger looks great! first time one doesn't get banged up in a movie. by the way, where can I get that movie Taxi? I can't find it anywhere.
AucklandGuy 01-30-2001, 03:17 AM I've just seen the cover of the DVD "Essex Boys", a British "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels"-type movie.
The shot is of a black Merc with two young punks inside: the shot is quite shadowy and I'm not 100% au fait with current model cars, but it's very obviously newish Merc.
Jim Anderson 01-30-2001, 02:04 PM Not to be morbid, just curious, what was Princes Dianna in?
I think Diana was in a S600. There was one old MB in the movie Outside Providence. Do not know what body style though.
95 R129
98 ML320
Well apparently she was in a 280 Sclass W140...but there has been some debate about that, specifically the engine size. Nobody seems to want to believe that a guy like that would own anything less than the top of the line.
420SEL 01-30-2001, 02:21 PM The car belonged to the Hotel, not Diana's friend. I think it has been mentioned before, but the S280 is very popular in Europe and from what I hear it has more power than the S320 we have in North America.
gregga 01-30-2001, 05:44 PM Just saw Walter Matthau in "Charlie Varrick" again. The executive secretary he follows is in a 2-seater with Nevada vanity plate VO H2O.
CaptAlex300e 02-01-2001, 01:57 PM Right, on the http://www.mercedesbenz.com, website you can find info on the SL280, which I never knew they made. You're right if they only wore their seatbelts! Are those cars bulletproof, because I have seen many many S-Class's with really thick glass, maybe its bulletproof.
420SEL 02-01-2001, 02:00 PM There was a really good chase scene last night on the Rockford Files. Linda Evens was being chased in a 450SL by two guys in the biggest boat of a Buick I have ever seen. Needless to say they didn't catch her.
Bigshot 02-01-2001, 02:20 PM The windows are triple paned to reduce wind noise. They dropped it after a few years due to cost and weight issues.

Crowe 01-21-2002, 03:34 PM A taxi that looks like a W114/115 plays a role in the movie "Black Hawk Down".
mbz380se 01-21-2002, 03:55 PM I saw that too. It's definately a diesel, from the clattering engine note. I also saw glimpses of a couple W123s parked on the streets of Mogadishu in the movie, in various action scenes.

el presidente 01-21-2002, 04:14 PM Checked the M-100 movie site and didn't see this one there.
Here's a stretch.....
In the movie "Cocktail" (1988), Tom Cruise's partner/mentor Doug Coughlin (played by Bryan Brown) gets married to a wealthy hottie named "Kerry" (played by Kelly Lynch).
In one scene, Tom's character drives Kerry back to Coughlin's place in her 300CE.
G-Benz 01-21-2002, 05:19 PM There was a Stephen King movie ("Needful Things", I believe) and the villian in the small town the movie is set drives a vintage black MB sedan...don't know enough about the early MBs to point out the model...:(
There was some other movie where Samuel L. Jackson borrows Rue Paul's blue 500SL (Shaft?) to pursue some bad guys. I cringed when he started ramming them with the car (ouch $$$), but my wife was watching it with me and noted how nice the car was and how much she wanted to have one like that...
...two months later on her birthday, we bought one. :D
rickjordan 01-21-2002, 09:04 PM I don't know if this has been mentioned already but there was a beautiful Mercedes 600 Pullman in the movie "10". This would be where Dudley Moore's character sees Bo Derek for the first time. Also there was another Pullman in Witches of Eastwick with Jack Nicholson.
Benz_man600 01-27-2002, 12:05 AM I was watching this police videos show on TLC, some man stole a brand new (1994) 420SEL in California. The White Mercedes was a perfest choice for the getaway. The LTD's and Chevrolet Caprices' couldnt keep up with the Mercedes. Eventually, they called in some Mustangs and were trying to force the Benz off the highway. The narrator said "This 300HP German sedan was built for high-speed interstate travel." Then the driver made a BIG mistake, he got off the Interstate. The Mercedes was a little too big for the winding back roads. As the curves got tighter, the Benz got sloppier. The cops kept running into the Mercedes! The driver eventually drove off the road and got the Benz stuck in a field. (The Benz was still running!) The narrator said the Benz was sold for scrap! SHAME SHAME SHAME! There were some good ABS shots in the chase. At one point the officer's had the MB blocked in on three sides so the driver floored it; if you looked closely, you could see the ASR preventing the rear wheels from spinning! By the end of the chase, the car looked VERY simiar to the attachment at the bottom of this reply.
In the new GONE IN 60 SECONDS, rapper Master P loses two W140 600's. At the beggining, Nick Cage blows one up, and half-way through the movie, Nick hooks a chain from a semi onto the bottom of the other ones engine. When the semi leaves, so does the entire front of the S-class, from the A-pillars forward
Green Machine 01-27-2002, 02:59 PM There's a brief glimpse of a light green 116 (don't know if its a D or an E) in the otherwise boring movie 'Blow' with Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz - the bad guys arrive in it just before Johnny gets shot in the shoulder in his motel room. Looks just like mine!
Holson Adi 01-27-2002, 11:29 PM sorry off topic.. but speaking of cops..
I was on Rt. 3 going into Rt. 93N (I think) to Boston... and suddenly the traffic slowed tremendously.. then I saw the flashing blue lights in the distance.. I thought everyone was going too fast...I couldn't go fast in that Hyundai Accent... the damn thing just starts 'floating' at 70+mph...
apparently a lady in her small car (dunno what it was..) had rear ended a PI Crown Vic... she sure hit it hard!
To add to the discussion,
I wonder why the 126/140 or any particular Benz is usually associated with the bad guys... I guess it's the gangster image associated with it...
Mark DiSilvestro 01-28-2002, 03:36 AM My vote goes to the 1984 British film
"The Hit" where the hitman (John Hurt) drives his victim (Terence Stamp) on a wild ride through Spain in a 220S Finback!
Happy Motoring, Mark
turbodiesel 01-28-2002, 05:16 PM In the movie "Blow" the green 116 was a 300SD.. if you listen closely you can hear the diesel clatter.
turbodiesel 01-28-2002, 05:38 PM I dont know if this was mentioned, but in leathal weapon 4 they had a nice car chase scene with a 560SEL and a newish pontiac grand prix bumping into eachother at speed.

bobbyv 02-05-2002, 04:17 PM in the Count of Monte Cristo, the name of the Edmund Dantes's girl is ... Mercedes ... (played by Dagmara Dominiczyk)
Frank X. Morris 02-06-2002, 12:17 AM Howdy All,
Here are some movies you missed somehow:)
Jurassic Park; The Lost World, Congo, Wings of Desire, Midnigt Express, The Gods Must be Crazy 1 & 2, Iron Eagle 3, Medicine Man & Killers of the Wild. All had Unimogs in them and there may have been ML & Gwagens in some of them also.
vrsmith 02-06-2002, 02:30 PM I watched the movie Running Scared last night. It stars
Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. The bad guy has a nice
silver 126 from about 1984, (bundt wheels). They don't wreck
it, (for once). They show the rear once, but I couldn't
read the number. I think it was an SE, not SEL.
Frank X. Morris 02-06-2002, 08:24 PM Howdy All,
Just caught the first few minutes of the Jackie Chan movie "Twin Dragons". A Mercedes fest:) They are all over the place. I don't know what models but they are Mercedes. One was a big bright red streatch limo.
thomas steffens 02-08-2002, 07:50 PM Any body see spy games its full of older benzs
Mockles 08-30-2002, 06:33 PM Marathon Man - I know the movie stands out more because of the torture scene, but in the beginning of the movie the character that plays Laurence Olivier's brother stalls in the street in a green finny, completely miss the number although if someone has it on tape, there are several shots of the rear of the car. He gets into an argument and races through NYC being chased by a Jewish guy, and they both die because the Benz hits an oil truck.
240DBenzer 08-30-2002, 09:58 PM The colorized remake of Night of the Living Dead features a w123 in the opening scene which ends up smashing into a tree. Sweet scene. :D
Billybob 08-30-2002, 11:08 PM The movie "The Driver" Ryan O'Neil's auditioning scene in the parking garage!!!!!
Anyone see or remember it?
Holson Adi 08-30-2002, 11:32 PM I don't know if anyone mentioned this...
but Richard Gere drives an older model 300CD W123 in the movie Primal Fear.
Rented that movie just to see it! His car is nice in the movie!!! it looks new.... wish mine looked like that...
Mark DiSilvestro 08-31-2002, 02:30 AM I had forgotten about that scene in 'Marathon Man'. I saw it again, recently on TV. It was especially painfull since I recently acquired a green '60 220S Finnie and the one in the movie started out looking much better than mine.
Happy Motoring, Mark
KylePavao 09-03-2002, 05:09 PM A great W115 240D taxi is driven by a Somali man. And it is not wrecked!
ljcml 06-25-2003, 12:00 AM Gone in 60 seconds (Nicolas Cage); there's an interesting segment on how a mole in the MB dealership was getting the smartkeys ordered so they could steal specific cars. Without his help, supposedly MBs are theftproof, even in Hollywood.
Spo123 06-26-2003, 01:48 AM Possibly a 220Se..............white with black (if I recall correctly) ragtop driven by a Jamaican record executive. Most, if not all scenes with the canvas roof lowered. VERY COOL.
The film= The Harder They Come, with Jimmy Cliff.
Also in the film is a memorable scene concerning Jimmy Cliff's well loved and subsequently stolen BICYCLE.;)
Two points to the respondent with the quote by Jimmy Cliff as he admonished the theif.
Best wishes always, Spo.
william rogers 06-28-2003, 12:45 AM They blew up some nice Mb in Black Rain, good movie but I hate to see 126's go up in ball of flames ,hope it was a computer trick........
william Rogers.......
downsmith 07-03-2003, 03:29 PM I was enjoying reading about the great MBZ's in the movies, but I did not see anyone mention the one 560SEL that Tom Hanks and Melanie Griffith got into trouble with in "Bonfire of the Vanities".
Which brings me to another thing that I have wanted to say here for a long time. Merecedes has a reputation not just for reliabilithy and safety but for UNDERSTATEMENT! I read about you guys who drive your Mercedes Mods and that think you have to shove it other peoples faces. True class does not brag.
I actually saw a vanith licence plate on a Benz that said "MERCEDES". DUH!!! What a waste of money!
If Zen Buddism has taught me one thing it is this, "I know I have a Benz and they know it too." If you start bragging about it or talking about or shoving in people's face, you then become a Wally; especially to the girls.
1967250s 08-24-2003, 02:04 AM I hope nodody mentioned this one....
I rented The Exorsist and low and behold; mercedes, mercedes, mercedes.
There is an SL, a 600 at the party and a 108/109 near the end, all in pistine condition. Remember this film was released in 1973 so all car are new..... exept for a 60's "S"coupe parked at the curb.
Go out and rent it, it's realy worth it.
Dan
Mark DiSilvestro 08-24-2003, 03:09 AM Yes, forget Max VonSydow and projectile vomiting with Linda Blair. I never thought The Exorcist was all that scary anyway. I'll have to check it out again for the cars.
There's another Mercedes you can't SEE in the movie. The demon voice was performed by actress Mercedes McCambridge.
In the 1977 movie 'The Driver' starring Ryan O'Neal, that's a W108 (250S/280S?) he totally trashes, while demonstrating his driving skills in an underground parking garage.
Happy Motoring, Mark
domchang 08-24-2003, 12:12 PM clint eastwood movie with charlie sheen....near the end, watched a R107 MB get sprayed by a machine gun and then Eastwoord and Sheen drive out of the upper floor of an exploding garage in what looks like a R129 MB!
once they come to a stop after some flying with the R129, Eastwood makes the comment: "engineered like no other car".
