View Full Version : Tool Rental Program

Brian Carlton
06-24-2005, 02:46 PM
Greetings to all:

I have discussed this with Jim and he has agreed to post this as a sticky.

As you all know, there are many tools for these vehicles that you only need one time. So, buying them is a costly proposition and doesn't make economic sense.

So, it would be far better if we can get a set of tools together and rent them to other members at a reasonable cost.

This is the intent of this post.

I have agreed to manage this post and will update it continually with which tools are available and from which member.

So, if anyone has a tool that they wish to rent to other members, please send me a PM with the name of the tool and the cost of the rental. I will put it in this post.

If you wish to rent a tool listed below, contact the owner of the tool via Private Message or e-mail. The terms of the rental are between the lessor and the lessee. In the case of tools that may be damaged or where there is risk of injury to the end user, I recommend selling the tool to the member. When the tool is returned, the sales price, less the rental fee and shipping, is returned to the member.

Good job, Brian.

How about a wish list and perhaps a list of tools that folks are willing to lend in the confines of their driveway?

I'd love to find someone who will share an IP A-B timing light or a dynamic tester. Hopefully someone close to me has one I can come over and use.

The terms of the rental are between lessor and lessee. If someone has such a tool and will rent it in the confines of their driveway, that's fine.

I'll add it to the list and the members can work it out between themselves.

I'd sure like to rent the RIV tool to set timing on the 603. It would guarantee accuracy and save me immense grief with it. Maybe I'll try to buy one myself and rent it out, if nobody has one available.

I stumbled on to one of these yesterday at a tool warehouse clearance.. I paid $30
64$ doesn't seem so bad...made in USA too

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/hm-performance/dicote.html

For most Diesel trucks & cars.
Supplied w/three popular adapter numbers. ( Mercedes adapter included.. I confirmed before I bought)
Has an easy to read 2-1/2" diameter gauge head.
Flex hose w/swivel head which eliminates the need to remove auxillary equipment such as power brakes, steering, air conditioning, & manifold.
Includes quick side release valve to reset gauge without removal of adapter.

Gauge Range: 0-1000 lbs psi (0-70 kg psi)

I'll delete this if needed..for the sticky program

That would be perfect for the rental program.

Care to put it in??

Most members need a compression test once in their lives. ;)

I don't mind a personal check. But, I suppose Paypal would also be acceptable. However, you must realize that Paypal will get a percentage of the entire deposit, not just a percentage of the rental. Then, when the deposit is returned, they get the almost the same amount going the other way.

It can add up to some money.

What would Paypal take for the spring compressor? $230.00 one way. $200.00 the other way??

I don't really have any special tools that I can think of but I do have the large allen wrench for removing the water plug to install a bock heater on a 617. Cost me like $13? I'd rent it out pretty much for the cost of shipping each way. I will soon be buying a flywheel lock tool for the 60x engines. Unless of course someone here already has one? It holds the flywheel so the front crank seal can be replaced.

Thanks

This would be the case if the tool owner were to return the deposit by using the "send money" option. However, PayPal also has a "refund" option (either full or partial). From their web site:

If you send a full refund using the Refund link within 60 days of receiving the payment, PayPal will refund the fees charged for the transaction. If you send a partial refund, the percentage of fees refunded will match the percentage of the original transaction refunded.

Well, "dieseldiehard" will be the first to see how the crimper crosses the USA and more importantly, how it works. Though the actual MB tool (at least it is so stamped), he will be the first to use it. Anxious for "dieseldiehard's" feedback to the rest of us.

Thanks for making this idea work.

PS Anyone have any suggestions on minimizing the shipping/insurance costs? I used USPS Priority Flat Rate $7.70 with $150 insurance and that added $3.20 to the cost one-way. The tool weighed about 4# packed. Double that cost to the person using the tool and it is possibly higher than it needs to be.

that's a real quandry. While homemade tools can probably travel sans insurance, you wouldn't want to lose a tool such as the crimper. When I sent a ball joint press (via UPS) I was surprised how expensive it was. I think the insurance was charged something like $1 for every $100 of value, and if you went over, it was like $2 for $101-$200?? Not sure I remember this right, but my point is to find out if there are any break points in insurance costs.

BTW, some time ago, leathermang started to get a few tools together for a loaner program such as this. http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=104242 Without the sticky, I'm sure it was hard to maintain visibility. I sent a couple homemade jobs that might be helpful to the general cause. One is a mandrel for pressing cylinder sleeves in a 617 ( will fit other engines with similar bore) Another is a plate with a square hole which will hold the captive nut that can break free of its retainer. This fits into a body slot where the casting for the support joint in the front suspension is attached - did I fail to confuse you in my explanation? A third is a half-complete tool for removing the original type pressed in aluminum B2 piston sleeve on a 722 trans. As far as I'm concerned, these can all go into the "tool loaner program" and travel without insurance or deposit. Hope this helps.

Steve,
I didn't realize this was a virgin tool! Nothing like breaking in a new tool (I'll take great care using it!) and thanks to you for making this tool available :)
As for reducing shipping costs, I believe Fed Ex might beat the USPS when it includes a lot of insurance. I have an account and get a discount on Fed Ex, if one just carries an item into their office they charge a somewhat higher rate.
Another item worth considering for the loan program would be an IR thermal gauge. I have a calibrated contact temp meter (digital) that I could put on the loan program, its good for checking A/C vent temp as well as verifying water temp gauge readings. For the common complaints of radiator problems an IR device would be better.

United Parcel has free automatic insurance up to $100 with any shipment.

But it is difficult to collect. Thay have a stupid rule that the shipper has to makes the claim and fight with UPS to get paid. If the shipper loses intererst in pursuing the claim, the recipient gets screwed and has no recourse.

At least that is what happened to me.

The shipping costs via USPS and UPS have become outrageous. The spring compressor, which weighs 11 lbs. costs over $13.00 to ship to Indiana. This includes insurance of $200. The insurance with USPS is way too much. It would have been less costly to use UPS, but, only for the insurance.

I shipped a spring (15 lb.) via UPS recently. $15.00!

The only way to save a bit is to use Fedex Ground. The same spring costs $11.00 with them.

The cost of shipping the spring compressor two ways is almost as much as the cost of the rental.

Just received the timing chain crimper back from its x-country trip (NH > CA). It visited dieseldiehard and came back well relaxed from the warmer climate. If everyone's rental experiences go as smoothly as this one did we should have alot of happy forum members. It is really too bad the postage w/insurance drives the cost up. In the future, I am going to try to barter first and charge the $10 only if there is nothing to barter for. Thanks "dieseldiehard" and Brian for getting this program off the ground.

In fact I did ask at Autozone. The sales guy didn't know what I was talking about. In general, I haven't had good luck getting anything more Benz-specific than metric wrenches at these places. ;)

I don't have a big problem purchasing one, but it's the same old story. I hate to throw down $50 for a pretty specialized tool that I don't expect to need very often. :(

Is this the 603 timing indicator box? I need one!
I recently replaced the rings in my '87 300D turbo and it isn't running well, its nailing and all the injectors were rebuilt by Gus at the local Bosch shop so I am very sure they aren't the problem. rather than use the eyeball method (using a mirror to look for the slot in the IP) I'd rather do this the factory way.

Does anyone have a Tie Rod Ball Joint tool. 21.5mm fork. Inside working height 50mm. Or something else that will work. My air hammer is shot so I thought I'd try one of those little tools.

Vehicle is a 1985 300 Turbodiesel, I need to do all three tie rod assemblies.

A trick that I use to separate such joints is to smack it with a large mallet. You want to hit on the side of the piece that receives the joint. So, if a tie-rod, hit on the spindle next to where it goes through the hole. As always, use caution.

Willy, the list only shows the member and the price. The terms are up to the lessor. I would strongly urge you to request a deposit equal to the value of the tool, if you have any doubts about who the person is. Surely someone with a zero post count would necessitate a full value deposit.

Steve does this with the timing chain crimper. I have not yet done it with the spring compressor because I'm gaining experience on the durability of the tool.

But, it appears that it really can't be easily damaged so I may elect to go this route very soon.

The cost to ship the spring compressor is at least $15.00 each way. If we can eliminate one of these charges, it drops the rental cost by 25%.

For those renting my crimper, the above worked great. It saved postage/insurance costs one-way for the renters.

The crimper just arrived home today after nine months or so of touring the country. California wins hands down as the most active with Texas coming in second.:D

I must compliment the forum membership for the diligent care they took with this tool. One member put a small scratch one side of the tool and offered to pay me for the tool. This was such a minor cosmetic blemish . . . everyone has been great about paying.

Brian, you really got a good thing started and I can see many are taking advantage of it.

Autozone has a loan program. Does anyone know how well this works? I don't want to buy a Mityvac just yet (I'm a student, no job until fall) for troubleshooting my vac system. Autozone has this for their loan program, but I'm worried about the deposit. I could go out and buy a cheap one for $20, but that'd kind of defeat the purpose.

Edit:
HOLY CRAP! I just called the local AutoZone, and the deposit on the vacuum pump is $200!!! :O
They only cost $20 at Harbor Freight- albeit with questionable quality- and the MityVac branded one is only $35! $200! How?!?! What?!?!

At Autozone you buy the tool then get your money back when you return it. No fee. A pickle fork is something ridiculous like $50. Loaner tools are separate from tools they have for outright sale.

I have the timing chain crimper tool that does both single and double row MB timing chains. It is presently on its way to CA via this "Tool Rental Program". I try to have it sent from one user to the next in order to keep everyone's shipping cost at half of what it would otherwise be. I get $10 (personal check) for the rental, payable after the job is done. So far, everyone has been shipping the crimper via USPS and I require that it be insured for $150. That latter adds a couple dollars to the United States Postal Service's coffer but at least it is reasonable. If you want to be added to the list at some point, e-mail me your contact info. Insurance is worth it, IMHO
Case in point, I have loaned out my splined delivery valve tool 4 times and until the last return time it always made its way home.
Now a member carried it to the Post Office and sent it off with a delivery confirmation (tracking?) Unfortunately the PO lost it! They say it was received at the service center but that is all they know after almost a month@! Sheesh! :rocketwho
They tell me the following:

"Unfortunately, Delivery Confirmation not a trackable service. This service provides confirmation only of delivery or attempted delivery date upon inquiry. It does not track the item as it moves through the mail stream, but scans it at point of acceptance and point of delivery. In the future, for content/time-sensitive items, you may want to consider using Express Mail®, which is our only guaranteed trackable delivery service."

Of course Express Mail is more than FedEx or DHL so go figure!

I hope it was insured O/W I figure I'm out a tool, and I was just ready for it to do a seal replacement!
This makes the second time USPS lost a package, one was a book sent out of MO, the clerk told the shipper they remember taking the book, it was sent by Media Mail and there was no tracking available so it dropped off into a black hole or something as it never came!
I also had another member asking for the tool recently so please remove my name from the list until this is resolved.

USPS has fallen a long way as they have continually lost revenue due to email and competition from DHL/UPS/FedEx/and Airborne. Instead of improving they have reduced their product features. This in my opinion begins a downward spiral not unlike when a mass transit autority begins to cut service. Then ridership declines, fares get raised, and revenues fall further requiring more cuts.
The folks at the USPS do not have the vision to compete effectively with the private competition, so I say dump them or use them at your own peril. Caveat emptor; to recognize just what risk you take to save a dollar or two. Personally I won't use them for irreplaceable items. UPS is so much more reliable, tracking is included, and insurance is more affordable than USPS. FedEx has never screwed me on a lost or late shipment, despite USPS or Airborne.

If someone wants to personally take the risk of a carrier losing their shipment and thus not obtain a refund for returning a tool, then that's their perogative. But honestly, it will soon mean the end of your tool loan program, since the deposits do not always reflect replacement cost. So you will lose the best, most expensive, and hardest to replace tools, renters will end up spending money to let the shipper steal or lose their items without any compensation. I doubt such a renter will rent such a tool twice.

Governments sometimes must enact laws to protect citizens from making purely self-interested short-term decisions which ultimately hurt themselves. I suggest that we do the same here.

E66,
My timing chain crimper is in use and possibly has another member afterwards (waiting to confirm). What I have done is add the names, addresses, and e-mail addresses to those using/waiting. A copy goes to each. That way the user knows where to send the crimper next and the ones waiting will have a good idea of when to expect it. So far, it has worked like a charm. The crimper does both single and double row timing chains. I charge $10 for the rental, payable by personal check when the job is done. By shipping it from user-to-user the postal and insurance (I require that it be insured for $150 and that adds a few dollars) charge is half of what it would otherwise be. D'oh - it's late, and I'm tired. ;) I fixed the typo. Didn't use the lock, the crank didn't turn with the piston at TDC. If not at TDC, yep, the crank turns (I tried before starting the job, just to see what would happen.)

Thanks.

Sour grapes on my part -- Someone told me it was foolish to not have a ring gear lock when doing a leakdown test. It's prudent to have a lock but the few times I've done a leakdown test I didn't use a lock. If the engine started to turn, and it would do so really slowly. I'd grab a drive belt and unhook the air line. I've seen professionals do it this way too. Even if you don't stop the engine it'll go to BDC and stop right? For the rest of you... DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!

Tool content -- I have a similar valve spring compressor. When I replaced the valve seals in the 91 300SE, it wouldn't hook enough coils to compress the springs enough to release the keepers. Had to borrow a big c-clamp compressor. Not a problem since the head was off the car.

D'oh - no, sorry - mine's not for rent. :( I just wanted to show why you shouldn't use the "wrong" type of compressor. There are Klann copies/clones sold on eBay that look just like the Klann, which work well, and cost about $200. If you want to buy one, and can't afford the Klann, the eBay copies aren't a bad choice. I'd avoid anything else though.

I would like to rent a flywheel retaining tool like the one pictured. If anyone has it, how much are you willing to charge? http://www.zdmak.com/wbstore/images/MBM0240.jpg

I'm using it to remove and install a new crank pulley. Basically to lock the engine so that i can torque it to 235 ft lbs.

http://www.samstagsales.com/

They are offering the real KLANN for 799.

I think I did a GB about 4 or 5 years ago for 750 or 700...I cant remember, but great price.

I have never even heard of anyone using this tool, although I know there are factory procedures for it. What is the problem you are trying to cure? Generally with good engine, trans, and diff mounts... and a good driveshaft center carrier support... the angle usually is a non-issue.

I'm grasping at straws. I replaced the tranny in a car I bought with a bad one to begin with so I never drove the car before the swap. Everything else is fine...all the obvious stuff...so I'm assuming a good place to start would beto check the alignment of the DS. But I also have a suspect RR wheel bearing / CV. The short short seems to wobble alot. I may start there. Anybody got the rear wheel bearing puller for a W124??

A bad rear wheel bearing will cause a growling/roaring noise that increases with vehicle speed. It's quite noticeable if you can drive a different 124 for comparison. The bearing puller is very expensive and it's not likely you'll find anyone that has it, besides the dealer. The DIY method of rear bearing replacement is to disconnect all 5 links, and remove the rear wheel carrier (with bearing) complete. Then have a shop use a hydraulic press to remove & install the new bearing. Or buy a used rear wheel carrier (with used bearing), and install that. The bearings usually last a LONG time (200-300kmi or more). I've never seen a rear axle shaft fail without the boot coming apart and spreading grease everywhere, but it's possible. I'd definitely get a good, used, low-mile axle shaft... all the rebuilds have a bad reputation, and new OE/OEM axles are outrageously expensive.

BTW - what is the problem? Noise? Vibration?

Well, I have a vibration that appears at 100KPH. Worst is between 100 - 120 then it stays the same up to 160. I lifted the car on 4 stands and ran it up to 100, until the vibration / thumping started and I could feel it with my hand on the bottom of the diff. I'm ready to pull the driveshaft out and check the hanger bearing and the "hardie" discs. They appear to be fine..but I will remove and check. The half shaft boots are not split but I do detect a "clicking" in the right rear when the wheels are turning, at all speeds. But no crunching or grinding. I have had them fail in the past and am familiar with that symptom.....

Brian.

Jack up the real wheel that U suspect is bad. Try moving (not rotating) the wheel with your hands on the tire to see if U can feel any "chucking". If U can't feel any looseness, the bearings are probably OK.

In the MB repair book there are a couple of pullers used to disassemble the axle bearings. I was able to get mine apart with the judicious use of an acetylene torch. All the parts I cut were in the bearing repair kit which I bought on the internet for about $50.

Maybe U could get a used drive shaft to replace yours. Thats what I did when my drive shaft started vibrating.

Well, I disconnect the 1/2 shaft on the suspect wheel, ran the car up on jacks and the vibration is still there. Pulled the whole DS out and don't really see anything wrong. Hardie discs seem fine, hanger bearing has a small amount of play but not much. The U joint does have the "usual" flat spots but I've had cars with the same and no vibration. But I might send the whole shaft out for balance and have the U joint replaced. I tgink someone in WA state does it.

I have more stuff I can rent out:

M116/7 head bolt and cam tower removal bits
Single AND Double row timing chain crimper
REAL MB ball joint press (very heavy)
Spring compressor
M110 valve adjustment tool
616/617 valve tools
Glowplug Reamer

I'm sure there is more, just have to look around. Like others I need the value of tools up front plus whatever the fee is to ship it around plus a few dollars for a strip and a six pack. :D

I should be picking up a flywheel locker for the 616/7s and the M103/603s soon.

I'm looking to rent or buy the double row timing chain cover (stops the chain from jumping a tooth) and the tensioner pin remover. Any out there. Please contact via email @ bbeberness@aol.com. Thanks a bunch.

I'm hoping there is someone out there that just may have these tool, maybe knows where I can rent them, or even buy some cheep. (pinion depth tools $80 and up)
I know I'm going out on a limb here but it's better then the "rock and a hard place" that got me here.
Just because someone or someplace specializes in one thing does not always mean they have no knowledge or tools to do anything else.

The small DANA rear ends are incredibly similar to the w126 500/560 rear ends, close enough where I have thought about using a DANA locker in one of my pumpkins.

Anyway, try this seller, he has sold a lot of MB tools including some rear end tools recently.

Also, maybe you can contact AMG-East - Member ID = jhodg5ck he could probably shim it if you need.
