Anthony 02-23-2001, 12:48 AM 92 400E 112k and many more to go. This car ROCKS!!
MitchLampson 02-23-2001, 01:53 AM Geez, I seemed to have started a "bore-a-thon" with my cryptic response, so allow me to expand: my car is awesome. I had an '86 300E 5-speed and was really looking for more power. Boy, did I get it! (I do miss my manny tranny, though) I'm going to be doing some upgrades to it over the next several years, starting with 17" AMG wheels from TireRack, 225/45/17 tires (Bridgestone Potenza RE 730's??--I think Doc Fuentes has those on his), Eibach springs, Bilstein sport shocks. If I go completely insane (or win the lottery), swap out the airbox for Renntech one, swap out rear-end for 3.07 from older SL, rig for watertightedness, add some air ballasts and a rudder, and then: wings! This will be a land, sea, and air m'er f'er that NO ONE will want to mess with! (Or I could just get a 500E...) --Mitch

Just put the Euro lamps in today, but they forgot to send bulbs, and I can't bring myself to take them back out.
Anyone know where I can get some bulbs (hella 55/100?) in the Dallas area?

brianw 02-24-2001, 12:25 AM I bought mine on 12/23/00, and simply love this car. As Mitch said, I too was looking for the Mercedes V8. My mods so far are 17" AMG 5 spoke replicas, Michelin 215/45 Sports, clear corners, Eibach lowering springs, Sportline sway bars, front and rear, K&N filters, cross drilled rotors (yes I read the thred, but wanted them anyway), Mintex pads, stainless steel lines, Alpine cd/changer, Infinity 3.5", 5.25", 6.5" Kappa series speakers, Infinity 12" Kappa sub, Alpine V12 5 channel amp, Phoenix Gold xs2500 amp. I just painted the front plastic grill insert black, turned out great, and ordered new chrome strips and hood emblem. Am ordering Euro lights tomorrow, and am looking for a good shifter level for an all black interior. Might do the chip sometime in the future.
I love driving this car!
Take care,
Brian W.
ocpdba 02-24-2001, 01:00 AM Ah ha!
I was in Discount Tires Friday looking at some 17x8 Replica Alloys (AMG look) wheels. What size are yours? I am hearing that the 8 inch might be too wide, but you know, I have yet to hear someone say "yes, I put 8 inchers on and yes, they were too wide and yes, I am sorry." It seems like everyone I have seen respond to this question does so on a theoretical basis, which does not totally satisfy me.
What do you think? 8 inch too wide?
Jack
Anthony 02-24-2001, 02:15 AM 8 inch is on the max for this vehicle.(from what ive been told) I have 225/40/18 on 8 with an offset of 40.(I had them shaved from 35 to 40) Dude, I'll get pic's so all of ya'll can see it. No, there not AMG wheels, There better. Still working on Euro heads, and 94 tail lights. wait and see....
brianw 02-24-2001, 02:23 AM Yes, I put the 8" rims on, and they are not too wide for my taste. The car looks "healthy" with these tires and line up to the edge of the fenders quite well. This is a subjective interpretation of the setup, but I like the look and have had many compliments on the car already. I live in Iowa, so it isn't often to see a car set up this way.
Hopefully I'll post some pictures, and you can decide for yourself. Mechanically, there is no rubbing anywhere with the 215's, but was advised there might be some rubbing if I went wider.
By the way, did you have an opportunity to compare the AMG's to the replica's? I posted earlier how the replica's had a visually superior finish than the original AMG's when I purchased mine.
Also, Duck Muck, any other pictures of the spoiler? I would be interested in seeing different angles. You thinkin about getting one?
Take care,
Brian W.
czwbkx 02-24-2001, 05:17 AM Mine's a 92 400E, white with grey leather. I've added AMG Aero II 7.5 x 17 with 205 50 17 HTRZ2s and the Alpine trunk-mounted changer with factory wiring.
Does anyone know of a good transmission valve mod? I don't get a good downshift from a rolling start (ie expressway merging)? Will add a chip when I find a good one.
Euro lights are appealing, but I don't want to give up the automatic circuit monitoring system or wipers, so I'll wait until I can figure out a way to keep them with a Euro conversion.
R.
ocpdba 02-24-2001, 12:18 PM When you say you had them shaved from 35 to 40, you mean that you put spacers in to change the offset?

Sorry, but that is the only picture of the Carlsson front spoiler that I have...I think it has since been taken off the Carlsson website. I like it very much, but am leaning more towards the updated AMG front spoiler for the 94-'95 W124.

Bob I 02-24-2001, 09:24 PM 1995 E420 Special Edition 55,000 miles
Purchased May 2000 with Starmark Warranty
brianw 02-24-2001, 09:30 PM Hey Bob,
What options does a Special Edition have?
Thank you,
Brian W.
Bob I 02-25-2001, 03:39 PM Back in 1995 Mercedes had a tough time moving the W124 E class since the new E Class was coming in the 1996 model year. I think Lexus was also hurting them some. Mercedes offered a Special Edition on the 300D, E320 and E420 that was designed to spur sales. The package included special metallic paint, and integrated cell phone, CD player, 10 speaker sound system, drivers seat and steering column memory, stainless steel door sills, special alloy wheels and walnut interior trim. On the 300/320 series the extra cost was about $1,295 for the options that were worth about $4,300. I haven't yet requested a copy of the original window sticker for my E420 so I'm not sure what the extra cost for the Special Edition package was on it. The E420 already had burl walnut trim, driver seat memory, and special wheels so maybe the charge was less than $1,295. My color is Emerald Green which I think isn't that common on the E class. When I went looking for a 1995 E420, the Special Edition was a nice plus.
DuckMuck 02-25-2001, 05:44 PM Bob I,
Odd, I bought my car new from the dealership new in '95 and never heard of this "Special Edition"...from your list, the only thing that I can pick out is the upgraded speaker package which includes the 6-disc CD changer, which I got...and the cell phone mounted in the center armrest...the other things all came standard with the E420. Emerald Green is a standard metallic colour like Black Pearl for the W124's, and is quite popular in Vancouver, so I can't seem to pick out anything special in this case. What are these "special" alloy wheels? The E320 and E420 had the same 8-hole alloy wheels as all other cars basically. Do you have a picture? Are they AMG wheels? I've never heard of this package before...and it was never offered to me...thanx for the feedback.
[Edited by DuckMuck on 02-25-2001 at 04:49 PM]
Bob I 02-25-2001, 07:35 PM DuckMuck,
The alloy wheels are 6 hole. I thought the E420's came with special 6 hole wheels to set them apart from the E320's just like they now do with the E320/E430 models. Since you have the 8 hole wheels this apparently wasn't the case back then. I'm not sure I like the 6 hole wheels better than the standard 8 hole ones. I bought almost new 5 hole 16" wheels from a 1999 E430 which I think look better. I don't have a picture of the 6 hole wheels but try the following address and it should take you to an E320 for sale on eBay that has them.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=562855218
Were stainless steel door sills standard on the E420 in 1995? Since most of the Special Edition items could be purchased as options, it was the reduced pricing of the options as a special package that made it different. As indicated in my first reply, because many of these features were standard on the E420, the Special Edition pricing was probably less than on the E320. I think Mercedes offered these Special Editions sometime toward the end of the 1995 model year. In June of 1995 I had an E300 4-matic coming off of lease and I remember seeing a 1995 E class Special Edition E320 in the dealer showroom. I believe they also have had Special Editions of other models over the last 5 years. I could probably dig through some old MBCA Star magazines from that time for an article about the Special Editions. They usually covered things like that, so if it is improtant to you I can do that when I get time.
DuckMuck 02-25-2001, 08:10 PM I'm sorry, I've never seen these "stainless steel door sills" before, neither do I see it in the options list that came with my car...do you have a picture? I've never heard of the Special Edition; do you have some sort of special badge somewhere or certificate? I bought my car in the latter half of '95, and it was never presented to me, although I still have the options list with pricing next to them sitting at home, and I don't see anything regarding a Special Edition. This is actually the first time I have ever heard of such a thing. I sort of see it as an option package, maybe offered locally by a dealership, or only in the US? My car was purchased from Mercedes Benz of Canada, so maybe it wasn't offered in Canada. I remember at the time, Mercedes never offered entire "option" packages that BMW seem to like to do, but offered optional equipment individually. I guess flipping through old magazines won't be necessary...my interest is simply outta pure curiousity...thanx for the feedback. Anybody ELSE heard of this "Special Edition"???
Anthony 02-25-2001, 09:02 PM Nope, The rims where at an offset of 35. When we put them on, they stuck out a little. My guy said that the rims needed to be shaved about 5 mm. I even thought that it would go from 35 to 30. apparently, when you shave the rim you go up when you put spacers, you go down. Who knew..

Bob I 02-26-2001, 12:08 AM I found the following information after researching this further:
Mercedes Benz of North America claimed the 1995 E Class Special Editions were to celebrate the 10th year of production of the W124 series. While the E320 and E300 diesel included the options at the $1,295 special price, the E420 package cost only $495 since it already had most of the features. Paint colors available were Moonstone Grey, Azure Blue, Sapphire Black (exclusive to the Special Edition) and a new color Brilliant Emerald Green. The Special Edition was introduced around April of 1995.
DuckMuck 02-26-2001, 01:31 AM oooooooooo...what is sapphire black? is it monochrome black? I love black! blacker the better!

DuckMuck 02-28-2001, 07:25 AM Lebenz,
Okay, I was confused by what Bob I was sayin', 'cause there seems to be so many names for 'em: door vestibules, door sills, etc. I just call it the "footstep"...anyways, the footstep that Bob I is referring to is this which is mounted to a black pearl W124 (courtesy of akry):
http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/dl70/pictures/04291bka.jpg
As you can see, the new stainless steal footstep mounts OVER the original two-chrome strip footstep...and you can see the original footstep is longer, so it protrudes out from underneath...not very elegant in my opinion...can you rip off the original and stick on the new footstep? I hate that protruding part...it looks ugly...but I guess it is a matter of taste...
94 E420. White and still all stock, except for the new Leather/burlwood shifter. Purchased last 1/01. 65,000 miles.

dsantos 03-01-2001, 10:13 AM czwbkx,
In regards to the transmission downshift;
There is a cable adjustment you can do that may help with the kickdown. By tightening up the cable, you can adjust the amount of throttle needed to induce a downshift.
I believe the name of it is a "bowden" cable. The cable leads from the throttle linkage down to the transmission. There is a plastic adjustment nut that controlls the amount of slack/tenssion on the cable. With the car off, the cable should not have any slack on it. When the throttle is depressed, the cable should move immediatily.
I set mine that once the adjustment nut took up all the slack, I gave it another full turn so there is about 1mm of preload on the cable.
You may also have a problem with the kickdown swith behind the accelerator pedal. When you stand on the pedal, you should be able to hear and feel the switch engaging. Make sure there is nothing getting in the way such as a floor mat or other piece of carpet/padding.
Hope this helps.

Bob I 03-02-2001, 09:37 AM My 1995 E420 doesn't fully cover the original footstep similar to the photo posted. It does cover it slightly more, but you can still see part of the original two-chrome strips. The passenger and rear door sills all fit fine however. I thought mine hadn't been installed properly and just needed some adjustment, but I haven't attempted to see if it can be corrected. Does anyone know if all the Special Editions have this same poor fitting problem?
Someone last year started selling after market stainless door sills for some Mercedes models. Has anyone seen these and if so, how do they fit?
DuckMuck 03-04-2001, 02:07 PM Okay, I checked up the responses to this thread, and made up a list:

Maybe there are some people who didn't respond, but it seems we have 14 400E/E420's on this board...so takin' into account that there are 3271 members from what I see, we represent approximately 0.428% of the M-B population on MercedesShop!!! I guess we're a rare breed...I guess I'll update the list as people respond...I think it is kinda neat to keep tabs on the 400E/E420 population...thanx guys!

brianw 03-04-2001, 02:32 PM I didn't realize I had not included the year...it is a 1992. A rare group indeed. Does anyone know the production numbers for the respective years?
DuckMuck 03-04-2001, 02:53 PM brianw,
There is actually a list of production #'s at http://www.mbusa.com but unfortunately, the furthest back it will go is '93, so it just missed '92. However, from the page, this is the info that I am able to piece together:
Year | Sales | $Price$ | Engine Specs
1992 | ???? | $????? | 4.2L V8, 268hp, 295lb-ft, 10:1
1993 | 3,321 | $56,400 | 4.2L V8, 275hp, 295lb-ft, 11:1
1994 | 4,217 | $51,000 | 4.2L V8, 275hp, 295lb-ft, 11:1
1995 | 2,843 | $52,500 | 4.2L V8, 275hp, 295lb-ft, 11:1
I got this info from:
http://www.mbusa.com/Starmark/container.jsp?/Starmark/overview/overview_engine.jsp&subNav=overview&yearModelCode=88_E400S&class=88_E&rnav=024568&menu=0_2
[Edited by DuckMuck on 03-04-2001 at 01:59 PM]
DuckMuck 03-04-2001, 03:12 PM One thing I want to point out, is that there seems to be some misinformation/confusion...I'm flipping through the site that I gave brianw, and this is what I gather:
'92 400E = 4.2L V8 w/ 268hp, 295lb-ft, 10:1
'92 400SE/SEL = 4.2L V8 w/ 282hp, 302lb-ft, 10:1
'93 400E = 4.2L V8 w/ 275hp, 295lb-ft, 11:1
'93 S420 = 4.2L V8 w/ 275hp, 295lb-ft, 11:1
so it seems that with the rollover between '92 to '93, the E-Class 400's GAINED power, while the S-Class 400's LOST power...but it seems people are translating the loss of power in the S-Class over the '92 to '93 model year to also be true for E-Class...which does not seem to be true from the website...I dunno if the site is right or wrong...anybody wanna double check?...however, from the site, it would seem that BEFORE '93, the 400E and 400SE/SEL had two seperate versions of the 4.2L V8...
I also remember reading from magazines that '92 400E had 268hp, the one that I remember was a Road&Track long term test...where the writer compared the car to Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries"...that is all that I can recall...

Duck,
Change over from1992 to 1993, 400E DID indeed get a HP boost due to different engine management(I think... can't remember exact)... 400SE became 400SEL in 1993, and indeed lost power(and all S-Class lost power), due to emission regulations...500E also LOST power from 1993 and on....again, due to regulations...

Spent last Saturday washing/claying/polishing/waxing and the paint nearly glows - the interior is very fresh and clean. I'm posting my review of my first road trip last weekend in the hot-rods forum later this morning.
Pictures are forthcoming- I'm getting some before-and-after's when the chrome '15 get replaced and the smoked corners and S600 grill get added.

rmasteller 08-07-2003, 03:44 PM I bought a 1994 E420 in December 2002 from a local MB Dealer with a 3-year Starmark warranty. It's metallic black (gray?) with black leather, ASR, heated seats, and stock everything. It has 65,xxx miles on it now. I love it. With Michilen MXV4's and ASR, it actually did very well in the "bad" winter we had this year. My only complaints are the high engine temps in warm weather (up to 105c before electric fans kick in) and not the best road feel on the highway. I'm playing around with tire pressures to get the "float" feeling to decrease. Oh, and the transmission shifts HARD from 1st to 2nd. My car starts in 1st, is that normal or did a previous owner modify the car? Most older (1960s - 70s) Benzs with automatics start in 2nd gear.
Anyone else with a W124/M119 from Ohio?

Congrats. Can I ask how much you paid for it? My only complaints are the high engine temps in warm weather (up to 105c before electric fans kick in) and not the best road feel on the highway.
Get a Cool Harness from JIMF. The info is on this page: http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_S500.html
My car starts in 1st, is that normal or did a previous owner modify the car? Nope, you're 94 E420 should start in first gear. I remember talking to the bergwerks folks about this and they assured me that it does. Here is their application guide for the 1st Gear Start Control Module. These cars start in 2nd: http://bergwerks.com/control_module.jsp#appg

I'm in metro-detroit... but I make it down to Columbus on occasion.
rmasteller 08-07-2003, 04:55 PM WJM,
Hi. You already have one, so I don't know why you're asking about prices, but I paid $19,500. It had 53,000 miles on it at purchase, was a one-owner documented car, and had all service records stamped by a local dealer. Local dealer also provided a printout of service and repair records and provided a MVI to show more information/history. It was probably a bit too high of a price, but it was the car I wanted and you don't see many for sale around here. I didn't want to buy one without driving it and examing it myself.
I looked at JIMF's web site - Awesome!!
Thanks for the 1st gear start confirmation. Any comments on the firm up shifts? It happens about 80% of the time. Since 20% of the 1 - 2 up shifts are good, it know I can do it.
Thanks,
As far as the price goes.. i was just just curious what these are still going for.
I don't seem to have a shifting problem. You may just want to have it checked out. When was the last trans service done?
rmasteller 08-07-2003, 06:01 PM Trans. service was done when they brought the car in on trade. This was at was at 52,900, they did it because there was no stamp on the 45,000 mile service in the book. It was done again at 62,500 (a little late on the 60,000 mile service). Of course the dealer says "it's normal". I held my ground that it was not normal. They were kind enough to supply some "special" transmission fluid this time for an extra $100. I asked "what is it, synthetic?" and the service writer said "yes, it's also just a better fluid that could help your shifting." It didn't do anything.
When I say "hard shift", I mean that I can hear the plastic trim in the car squeak if the radio is off.
Well,
I suggest you open a new thread for this on the tech forum. Use something like "W124 94 E420 Hard shifting from 1 to 2".

rdsc49 08-12-2003, 06:33 PM I have a '92 400e with 195k kms.
I really like it. Goes like #%@$.
Right now it needs a little tlc, but nothing time and money can't fix.
I am in sunny Ontario (or rainy this week!!)

amg280 08-12-2003, 08:20 PM My 92 400E also has a horrible 1st to 2nd gear change. Everyone that rides in my car is like whats wrong with the tranny. It bumps soo hard it moves your neck. In fact, my flex disk is wore out, and is probably partly contributed to this 1st to 2nd shift.
Other than that, I love it. Goes like hell.
Holson Adi 08-13-2003, 12:10 AM I missed this thread,
Bought an E420 a few months back. 83k mi. and now it's already got 84k mi. just because it was so much fun to drive. My first ever V-8! Never drove a V8 before. Not one that sounds as sweet at least.

Holson, You crack me up. According to your post, you've put 1000 miles on your car in a few months? wow. Is that considered a lot of driving in Jakarta? :)
Holson Adi 08-13-2003, 06:53 PM Yes, 1000 mi. would be A LOT of STRESSFUL driving in Jakarta. Stressful for both the car and I.. all those little motorcycles cutting through traffic, scratching your car in doing so....
also... it'd take ages to do 1000mi. in the city unless u know where to avoid traffic (out of the city)...
;) But it's a fun city nonetheless.. :)
oh well... I guess Boston's not too bad.. :)
chapayne 01-23-2004, 12:47 AM I love this Car!!

91,500 miles now and it's breaking apart :p well not, but it's finally needed repairs after a year of trouble -free ownership...
I guess it still is a 10 yr old 92k mi. car
now... why did MB not make a 400CE/ E420 Coupe?! :(
bigben3 07-12-2004, 06:03 PM Have had mine for 1 year now and it is starting to break apart, noisy lifter, throttle actuator(actually wiring harness going south) oh well not bad for 129000 K. Checked the oil tubes and they are all ok, I now have to find out how you go about changing the lifters on the E-420 looks like it can be real mean??
vanakin 08-17-2004, 12:29 AM I own a blue E420. No maintanance issues at all, will not let it go for anything. 145k and kicking strong.
carntrucknut 01-08-2005, 05:04 AM Have only had for 2 months now, and love it. Can't wait to get some 16" or 17" wheels with new tires under this incredible automobile. Torque to weight ratio and incredible top-end is just a pleasure to drive.
I plan on keeping this MBZ for MANY years.
I've had my 81 300D for over 14years now... and now my son drives it!
You gotta love the Benz folks and how they build their automobiles.
CABenz, Bay Area :)
Benzspoiled 01-09-2005, 05:27 PM Hello all, I am fairly new to this site and I think it's wonderful. I'm the proud new owner of a 93 400e.This is my first benz. I purchased it almost 4 months ago and it is in great condition. I've since painted the grille insert black and upgraded to chromed 430 oem 16in. wheels with 225/50/16 tires. Next I plan to add a remus exhaust.
Mike400E 02-09-2005, 08:51 PM I have a '93 400E with 109K miles now. Black on gray, a VERY nice color combination. Black is VERY hard to keep clean! I bought it used from a Lexus dealer (LOL!) 3 1/2 years ago. Here are my mods:
2.82 rear dif swap - unbelievable!!
H&R Lowering springs - subtle cool look
Cut out resonator - subtle but nice
2X10" subs in a custom box vented through the rear deck - big bass!
Car came with 16" chrome wheels
Wish list - New muffler, a little louder and chrome.
New 17" wheels.
Turbo/supercharger ~ 400HP or so. (Wife not interested........)

DRICHFL 04-27-2006, 06:17 AM 1994 W124/E420 I should have did this head count years ago....
KyGuy 04-27-2006, 12:01 PM Still driving mine.
Just turned 70,000 miles. Took a sweet road trip last April (20th Anniversary) to Napa, the Willamette Valley in Oregon and Walla Walla in south east Washington. Wine tour. Outstanding. Car was awesome. Put about 3,000 miles on the odo.
Changed out the rotors and caps before the trip. No brainer thanks to the DYI section here. If you haven’t done this, do it soon. Averaged over 26 mpg on the trip and from Roseburg, Oregon to Northern Cali we averaged almost 40 mpg.
Haven’t done the upgrades as cash has been used to finish house remodel.
Ciao for now

iwrock 06-16-2006, 10:38 PM Albert, I love your car!!!
I would love a set of new fenders.... I have been looking at the progress of your CF mods, and I must say I am very impressed!!! Those huge flares for the back of the 124 are going to be awesome!
garswa 06-24-2006, 06:32 PM Just traded in my '92 300E for an ebay '97 E420. My 300E had 190K miles but the engine purred so sweetly that until I read on this forum that this was status quo, I thought it was a rebuilt or new engine.
Anyway the E420 is like riding on a turbo-ised magic carpet. My kids love the stylized look of the 420 where they disliked the 300. I've yet to really open her up on the highway, but from what I've experienced so far, I like the W124 ride better than the W210.
I still haven't changed my point of view that I'd much rather buy a 9 year old Mercedez than a new US or Japanese (with the exception of the Maxima).:D
natural_person 08-13-2006, 04:20 AM 1992 400E 100,000 miles.
Got it May 1st in exchange for a gold coin collection. No ASR (thank goodness), no optional passenger airbag (more storage space!) Spent the last two months cleaning it up, changed all fluids, new springs, wheels, tires, ECU chip. Installed keyless entry & selectable 1st/2nd gear start. Changed steering wheel & shift knob; knob now says "V8". Retrofitted OEM HID projectors from an ML320. I think I'm almost done now : )

impalabuilder 09-21-2006, 05:55 PM My wife-to-be bought a 1989 260E. She totaled it in under a year...doing 40 mph into the back of a pickup while searching for her cell phone on the passenger's floor. Seatbelt definately saved her life.
So I bought her a 93 400E. I am currently squatting with the excuse of my long commute. I plan on swapping in a 2.82 diff when I get a free moment.
