CaptAlex300e

Sorry if this is to far off topic but other than the Hot rods forum I don;t know where to post this. I want to get a private plate. My frined just got one for his 96 Mustang GT , that reads "BADABING1". if anyone is familiar with hte Sopranos you'll know what the plate means. Well that plate is perfect for my friend as he is almost exactly like Tony Soprano. I am curious as to waht would be a good plate for a benz. I havew seen a E55 wit ht he plate VETTKLLR, as in Vett Killer. I was thinking of SlVR STR "silver star" or maybe BADYBENZ. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

an interesting problem you have.

i have some names but no such car.

VLVTHAMR - as in "velvet hammer"; a term used for cars like the Ferrari 456GT which is described as a race car under a thin layer of velvet; also a name play on the AMG Hammer brand; not too readable though (if you are not limited to 8chars then you could improve on it)

BIGSTICK/BIGSTIK - "speak softly and carry a big stick", as in TORQUE, which the E55 is endowed with

i'm sure others will come up with suggestions also ...

Why not stick a Europlate up front rather than a Mickey Mouse license plate? Make the car look authentic, not fake.

...Because he lives in New York and WE have to have American plates up front at all times :( Putting a german plate underneath it will look even more fake.

Capt
...There are some great plates in the NY area. How about "DNT BOTHR" for all the Honda people out there who might feel alittle frisky when they see you. Is there a website you can check to see if someone hasn't used your idea?

this may be a stupid comment but i thought the all US plates were limited to 7 charactors, not 8 or more. is it 8 in NY? i may be misinformed....

We are allowed up to eight characters (spaces included) on a Liberty plate and up to six on a "picture" plate. Liberty plates are the standard issue NY plates with the statue of liberty on it.

Only six characters here in CT. I've taken to naming my cars, and since I plan on having my 500E for a good long time I decided to give it a plate with its name..."BLTZEN". This in honor of the Blitzen Benz that set the world land speed record in 1910 at 143 MPH (228 kph). Guy driving musta had some stones, eh (pardon the reference)?? Was probably driving on dirt, and I doubt his helmet was Kevlar.

Blitzen, as I understand it, means Lightning in German. For a 500E, it only seemed appropriate IMHO.

On my wife's 500e , I've been thinking about;
"8YUR M3" (Ate your M3 :D.)

My FFR cobra plate reads, "UNREAL".....
Funny thing is that I still get asked , "Is it real?," constantly.

How about "Q-CAR"??? It is a British expression for "understated" automobiles, such as BMW M5, M-B AMG E55, etc. I *think* the "Q" references to Q, that inventor in the 007/James Bond movies that build gadgets and machines that are a *little* more than they appear to be.

Q SHIP A small merchant ship or warship with concealed weapons, intended as a trap for enemy submarines.

In auto speak it is defined as a 500E.

Did someone mention my handle?

I was going to get SLVRBL on my 85 380SE. My 5 year-old daughter calls her Silver Belle. The great state of Texas wants $40/year for personal plates. Seems kind of ridiculous to pay that much for something so silly.

I've lived in 2 states that statutorily require front plates (CA and OR), but have NEVER had front plates on my cars and NEVER been stopped for it(10+ years??; nice thing w/MBZ (at least w/the W124 series), you can get the bumper piece for the front that makes a smooth bumper all the way across (instead of the "plate" bumper--run about $125. --Mitch

Quite a few states have the rule for front plates in their books and hardly any of them enforce it.
New York enforces it, trust me on this! :)

They enforce in CA and OR, but cannot pull you over and write a citation solely for not having one (similar law to seat belts). They have to pull you for a qualified reason, then can legally issue belt, plate, etc tix. And the plate ticket is a fix-it here in CA, so you slap it on, have an officer sign your ticket, mail in $10 and promptly remove it lest you enjoy accumulating photo radar penalities. In fifteen years years I've had one fix-it (combined with a speeding) and two or three "Son, this state requires front license plates - why don't you run home and put it on" type comments in parking lots, etc.

Saw an Acura NSX with NSXTASY on the plate. Driven by an good looking blonde woman in a VERY short skirt.
I happened to be driving my truck that day (4 Runner, quite high up) in the lane to the right of this car. If you have ever looked down on an NSX, the interior is very visible from above. Very visible. I can say that plate was telling the truth.
Nice car too.

Go all the way out can bring some un-expected reactions from other ppl. I have seen a W140 with "Mr.Benz" plate, and wonder what he got?? Smashed windshields, punched out tires, broken exterior lights, bend/dent doors, and of course, good old bended/missing emblems...

Personal plates can tell a lot about the driver. Several years ago at a gas station I had finished filling up while the Volvo in line behind me revved it's engine. As I was getting my change and reciept, the middle aged blond woman driver saw an opening at the pumps next to me, screeched her wheels and cut into that pump lane in front of a car moving to use the pump, and then cut back into my pump lane in front of me to stop make me wait for her to fill her car (in retaliation for my making her wait while my tank filled  )! As she flipped me off while filling her tank, the driver in the next lane motioned me into his lane to go around the Volvo. I couldn't help noting that the woman's license plate was HTBLOND, and the frame said "I'm not stuck up, I'm a bitch". Interesting reminder that there are people crazier than me out there, but that some of them give warning via their plates, frames, and bumper stickers. :(

I think I remember reading about a California resident that had several Vettes; and he had the plates: Fast, Faster, Fastest, 2Fast. I always thought vanity plates were easier for cops to remember. About once a year I've *had to* choose to avoid impending tickets "by use of throttle and large steering inputs" - mostly through local neighborhoods (somehow calling it "outrunning a speedtrapping oink" seemed too, um, pompous). As they inevitably watch me - most likely speeding - by and for a brief period of time appear in the rearview, I'm not too anxious to put an easy-to-recall badge back there. It's paid (or rather, has not cost me) to have a low profile thus far. Especially as overpriced german marque-mobiles outnumber everything else in my dot-communist town.

Of course, if you have the sack, why not order "COPSSUK"?

Ashman
10-26-2000, 05:50 PM
Well I don't know what I'd put on a benz, but heres some plates I've had on other cars I owned...

ASHMAN - 1985 190e 2.3
ASH4ASH - 1983 GMC Jimmy K5
VERALIN - 1980 MGB

Now as to where they all come from. Well Ashman is a nickname of mine, My last name starts with ASH.

ASH4ASH well that truck used to be my older brothers before he gave it to me, so the plate was fitting, but it was really supposed to be ASH2ASH, because of a line in the grateful dead song throwing stones. Ashes to Ashes all fall down....

VERALIN - Came on the MGB When I bought it, but when I finally registered the car i had it changed. As I understood it, VERALIN was some british goddess or something, but also it is in a Pink Floyd Song, which is where I think it was derived.

If I were to put a custom plate on my benz, I would probably try my best to come up with something cool, using 7 lettes only as thats the max here in California. Something with ASh in it would probably be my best bet.

i always thought it would be hilarious to spell something profane backwards so when people see ya coming up in their rear view mirror it would say something else. Like the way ambulance is printed ont he front of an ambulance. I can just imagine someone looking in their rear view and seeing what
uoykcuf really spells. of course I would never do that on my own car, but it is an interesting way to get the plate you want if it is not available spelled forwards.. :) LOL

Personally I think personal plates are ok, but it depends on what they say. Here in california, I believe they charge you extra per year for customized plates in your registration..

My friend used to have HELYPLT on his late M3. he hasn't gotten around to putting it on his M5, but he doesnt know if he will. In case you are wondering it stands for Hely Pilot, or Helicopter pilot. He flies choppers.

His Jag XJS V12 has the best personal plate I have ever seen on a car. WILDPET. How cool is that, its a jaguar and the license is wildpet, and its a v12. though the 3 speed tranny really lacks on the acceleration, but it is one smooth Cat. :) The car used to be his grandmothers car, she had the jag and an acura. the Acura had the plate TamdPet, the jag had the WildPet plate. he ended up inheriting the jag when she passed away last year. not a bad car either its a 1990 with about 15k miles on it. she hardly drove the car...

in anycase, I would probably prefer to get a regular plate that in and of itself spells something. Like 4MBZ300 or something would be a cool standard plate to get in california for a 300 series benz. :)

The best auto generated DMV plate I have seen was on my brothers 1976 porsche 911S that he had. The plate was 3BUX440. 3 bucks for a 40 is what it ended up spelling. as in forty ounce beer. :) I loved that plate hehe.

in anycase, i have also seen a plate that would get you shot just about anywhere, but I really shouldn't post it here as its that bad. and I dont want to offend anyone. I couldn't believe it myself when I saw it, I wondered how the hell did he get a plate that says that?

One guy at my highschool years ago, had an acura integra with the plate RPNBWLS or as he used to put it , Rippin Bowls. When the DMV Asked him what it meant, he said it was the name of his bowling team.. hehe I couldn't believe someone could get away with that plate either, but he did.

in anycase, custom plates arent for everyone, but when you see one that is very clever or really seems to fit, then it usually makes me wish I had thought of it...

Ok, glad I found this thread....Here's what I have on a couple of my cars...

-BMW 745i Turbo "BOOST"

-DeLorean DMC-12 "OUTATYM"

-Jensen Interceptor "5LTR ETR" (translated to mean "Mustang 5 litre eater")

-250SE Cabriolet "CASINO" (this car was formerly property of Wayne Newton, hence the plate)

That's it, the rest of 'em have to live with regular old license plates. Although, "HWY STAR" has been seriously considered for the Turbodiesel since all it ever sees are the interstates.

Some of these have been quite interesting, and I was considering "AUTOBAN" or "ACHTUNG" or "Q BRANCH" on my 745i until I came up with "BOOST". What better???

P.S.--I really liked 3M TA3

Maybe I'll put that on my soon-to-be 600SEL!

I tried to get a vanity plate for my 6.9 but got turned down by the California DMV. I think it was "6969696." I may try again with "M6B9Z". I had a great idea for my 500E of "RMP RSTR." My girlfriend loved it but thought that, living in San Francisco, some people may get the wrong idea.

On a Porsche 911 I had many years ago I had the plate SIX-PAK, you know six cyl and beer!

My father at the age of 74 drove a Corvette with the plate NAUGHTY. How fitting.

My last vanity plate was HAVTAGO, taken many ways. My son now has it on his M3.

The best I've seen belonged to a friend of mine and he won a contest at Road&Track was 6ULDV8...or sexual deviate.

I agree about not to have one to remember, for ticket resistance and use 10100110 or l1ll11l1 or 0o00oo0o. Mix it up so the bears can't remember...do they? Try -/!-.1o? That should confuse the best of them!!

for the best ticket resistance, "noplate" would be my favorite. :) ehehehe

My mom had "NotMink" on her 84 VW Rabbit she had years and years ago. Seemed very fitting. :) hehe

Unfortunately we cannot request anything in the Netherlands...

The coolest plate I ever saw in europe was BAD 130 Y on a British Benz; In the United Kingdom they generally get plates with 3 letters, 3 numbers and 1 letter again. This combination wrote BAD BOY on the plate...

Does anyone know whether I can request something as well when I bring my car to the states as a non-resident?

Tough question MBenz.

I think that will depend on your State of temporary residence. Depending on what State you call home for the year or so, you may have to pass a smog inspection if you intend to register it, which your Euro car may not pass. You may just have to keep your NL tags on the car, and expect to explain your registration at odd times to the nice men in blue uniforms (or green, or tan or ...).

If you have the means, you could buy another car here in the States and put vanity plates on that one. Then import it back to NL when you leave. It's probably easier taking one out of country than it is bringing one in.

My Mustang had a plate frame that said "Get in, Sit down, Shut up, hold on!"
I had a greasy headed teenager in a screwed up, I mean sooped up Civic say, "What is your 5.0 really that fast, I bet you my friends turbo CRX can beat yours". I agreed to have his friend race me, so he called him and we waited at the parking lot. His friend pulled up and looked at my somewhat stock looking Mustang and said he wanted to race "car for car". I said fine and when I opend the doors, the windows were tinted, he freaked when he saw the rollcage. He really pissed his pants when my friend came to give me a jump at the rear battery ports and the car was idling with a very, very lumpy idle and the schrill of a blower whining. What the idiot failed to realize is that the Maryland tags I had on the car were just fake tags and that this was an all out race car that was just being switched from one trailer to another. The moral of the story, if the car has a parachute, wheely bars on the back, and 460 cubic inches up front, your POS Honda is going to get a beating. By the way the car runs low eights.

Wanna see how your ideas look on an actual plate? Or on another state's license plate, or even a mutated obscenely oversized plate? go to: http://www.acme.com/licensemaker/ You Can chose from 467 blank plates to start with. Then remember that you do have something else you need to do, ok? ;)

Here in California, you can either go to the DMV and look in a directory to see which "vanity" plates are already taken, or go online to: http://plates.ca.gov/search/.

Here's some I've seen on Benzes around No.CA:

DABOMB, BADBENZ, IR1RU12 and of course, IM1RU12, GVITUP, SHYBABE, LOVELY, BAD CO (Bad Company's former Manager).

And this one, I just noticed today after reading this thread:  4MFR666 (Very BAD Car-Ma)...

And there's words you can write on a calculator if you want to get real creative, like: 7734 (hELL turn it upside down).

For more of that bit of fun, yes, there's a website: http://www.angelfire.com/me/sblais/noframes.html

I'm even going to "out" Greg Allman here, and tell you that his vanity plate on his Mustang 5.0 reads, "BAYBRO" now that he lives here in "The Bay Area".

I have a vehicle with the plate: WINE GRP on it. The original owner was president of a company called the Wine Group. He said it really meant, "Whine & Gripe". But most people think it stands for "Wine Grape". And while I was working with film and commercial productions up here in the wine country, we jokingly said that it meant, "Wine Grip", as a "grip" is a lighting technician, so that would make me the technician responsible for the wine... :D

Personal plates are generally not my thing in practice, but my mind occasionally strays to what would be fun...

Though it would almost certainly provoke much frothing at the mouth from the bimwads (no disrespect intended, I have several friends who are suffering from that quasi-leprous condition) I thought that for a C36 and 500E there were some plates that would be choice.

500E plate: M5KILA or M5KILR

C36 plate: M3KILA or M3KILR

Its throwing down the gauntlet in a fairly extreme way, but what fun! Aside from something that would make the roundel crowd see red...

EIEIO (for an ML320/430/55...yeah its twisted, but...)

DZLPWR (any diesel...in affirmation or irony is up to you)

RENTCH (any tuner car or just to make em wonder)

GOTBNZ (generic)

4DRPRS (500E "4-door porsche")

Just some ideas...Lee

When I lived in Illinois, my Beetle was debuting as a show car. Plates read

VOLXWGN.

Moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and they had fewer letters available...so I went for

VXWAGN.

Later the dream plate was available as the original owner sold his Bug. So the next few years, the car graced the shows with plates that read

1HOTVW.

Got plates for my wife's Jaguar XJS V-12 that read

PUURRR.

That car was traded in for the 500SL when I moved to Texas.

Now in Texas, too many cars, so personalized plate fees would break the bank. Plus too many crazy Texas drivers (I don't need to be an easy target). MBs are very prolific down here, so announcing your marque is kind of tasteless.

Even though the Bug now sits outside, paint faded from 3 Texas summers, the license plate frame on the front still reads
"Faster than a speeding ticket"

Well as you already probably know from my pics of my car, the plate on my car since january reads "CPUHELP"

Since I own a computer and internet service company, it is very fitting as I am not only the owner, but also Manage the computer repair, rental, sales, and cabling department.

Originally I wasn't going to get one, but Since the name was available, I decided why the hell not. THe plate draws lots of attention, usually from people who don't realize what CPU stands for.

Greetings,

I am having a custom plate made for the front of my 500E.

I saw someone suggest 124036, I like this, as it seems 'random' to the unwise.

My question, my VIN is WDBEA36....., in Europe, would it be WDB124036 or just W124036?

I am not sure if the 'DB' = 124 or not.

Anyone? I did see some discussion about this but can not find it through search!

I really like NO MBA but that doesn't fit the car very well. My preferred plate style has a 5-character limit, making QSHIP top choice at the moment with FIVE0 runner-up (FIVE0 is a little redundant, though.) If either or both are taken, my second plate choice allows 7 characters, with SCHNELL looking pretty good (or MBQSHIP, to eliminate the inevitable Infinity questions.) I ruled out DA BOMB as being a little to snobbish (although it's fitting!)

I don't think that will work to well. I saw an article several years back about a guy who had a 280 Z (I think) with a plate that said "NOPLATE". QSHIP
MBQSHIP
WLFNWUL

Also, I came up with a new one last night, which I'll toss out there & see if it gets any response:

WARP 9 (you know, the maximum speed of a Galaxy Class Starship.)

Speaking of license plates...I had this monster a few years ago. It's a 1969 Coupe deVille. By the time I was done with the motor, it displaced 515 cubic inches...that's 8.44 liters for you European Folk:) .

Check out the license plate....

My benz says: DOGBENZ. It is the dog mobile. The other car doesn't have plates but when it does,.....
By the way, what is the plural of Benz; Benzes, Benzii, Benz's ? Just curious on this one.

for the best ticket resistance, "noplate" would be my favorite. :) ehehehe

My mom had "NotMink" on her 84 VW Rabbit she had years and years ago. Seemed very fitting. :) hehe

There wasa story severla years ago about someone with that plate. A 280z As I recall. Anyway, when meter maids cite a car with out a plate on it, they typed in "No Plate". You see where this is going right? He ended up with thousands of dollars in unpaid citations and a huge head ache. He ended up giving up the plate.

Jim B, years back I saw a red Ferrari(don't remember model) with California plates that read "FERRARI". This was on one of the main streets in Glendale.

I saw that on Ebay awhile ago I believe they wanted $20,000 for it. It was on a 308/328.

I shot this photo in the field over in Westwood 2 weeks ago. It's a stretch or it could mean nothing at all.

Why not stick a Europlate up front rather than a Mickey Mouse license plate? Make the car look authentic, not fake.

Hey, Greasil, is that Washington STATE or DC? I guess your friend must have created a lot of terrific fantasies for the men driving the same commute. She probably did a lot to calm potential road rage. Gotta love that!

"Erase" is my plate- car was totaled before I put it on. I liked the idea that parking tickets might get discarded and it was E-race phonetically.

Some time ago I read about a guy in who had the license plate "NOPLATE" with the same objective. He actually avoided tickets but eventually was ordered to turn in the plate after an police officer complained.

This one is not MB related but I thought it was rather clever. It goes back to the time when Nissan was named Datsun.

The plate was ICE CAR

I'll explain it if I have to. :P

Thank god for all the people who spend the extra money for these plates. If not for all of you, I'd have to find something else to occupy my mind with while I'm sitting in traffic.
