I am looking at buying a 1994 or 1995 E-class. Any recommendations or advice on engines to look for or stay away from? What about trouble spots to watch out for? Is one year better than the other? I am looking possibly at a diesel. How is the power?

Depends on what your priorities are. If you want diesel fuel mileage then get a diesel. If you want performance then buy a E420 or E500 (94 only). If you want a generally all around great car that is the leader in no field but very good in all, then get an E320.

Trouble spots...W124 V8's: cooling system, head gaskets, water/power steering pumps. None of them are particularly bad, just areas to pay special attention to. The regular E320 will have those same trouble spots except for the cooling system is less problematic. Just make sure whatever you are considering has detailed service records.

I believe the 95 had the 1st year of the new diesel engine, lots of power and very advanced.

I have a 98 300 E TD, a perfect car if you can find one!
