Gentlemen,

I recently purchased a 1990 SL 500. I’m looking into some basic performance modifications like stiffing up the struts with some new Bilsteins, dropping in K&N filters (if available), and perhaps upgrading to some high speed brake pads.

What are your recommendations?

There are plenty of discussions on how and what to do to improve your SL performance in this forum. Do a search and you will come up with plently of suggenstions from the experts.
As far as the K&N filter is concerned, there are also discussions on that as well. If memory servers me right, if you change your OEM filter on every oil change (or every other?)as mentioned by one of the members here, you will get just as good performance as replaceing it with a K&N. I cannot speak with absolute authority here, as I have never tried it.
