I am looking into purchasing a '97 or '98 ML 320. I have heard that there were some mechanical problems in the first couple of years, but I haven't gotten any specifics.
I'd like to hear from anyone who knows what these problems were and what Mercedes has dome about them.

I have my ML320 for over a year and have experienced no problem whatsoever. My advise is to make sure you get a complete service record from the previous owner or the dealer you are buying it from. To purchase additional StarMark warrenty (2 years at least) is always a good bet just in case you need it sometime down the road. Best of luck to you finding a good ML !!

I have a 99 ML430, and from purcahse we had a eletrical door lock problem on the front passenger side door. They repaired it in 2 hours the next week. They did have alot of problems, but the best thing is to have the dealer get you a complete list of things to look for, and while under warrenty have them do a complete look over the car.

Welcome to the club. I love mine.
