I am about to purchase a '95 500Sl with 18k, black/grey for $50, first off, did I get a good deal? The car is perfect.

Secondly, does anyone know of a good technical 500SL website or any good books that are a "must-read" for a SL owner?

Lastly, I'm glad to be in the Mercedes family. I've been looking for a long while & I think I've finally found a good one.

Hope it was a typo. You paid $50 for the R129? How about I give you $1,050 for it? j/k. You will find a tremendous wealth of information and advises on this site and look no further (do wish more topics on the R129, guess its such a good car that there are just not that many problems). There are alot of knowledgeable people here and I have learned almost anything and everthing on how to take care of my MB from this site. Welcome to the MB family and enjoy your roadster.

I guess I'd like to know why it is called a R129..

I guess it is like the new Porsche 911's are 996's, the '95-'98 ones are 993's, and the Boxster's are 986's...same thing?

Same thing, Rob - 129 is the chassis #.

R129 is the chassis code. W means sedan/coupe, R means roadster/sport. R129.067 is the chassis code for your car (1 500SL) The "old" E-class cars are the W124's, the new E-class cars are the W210's, pre-129 generation SL roadsters were the R107's, the SLK (though based on the C-class W202 platform) is known as a R170.
