I would like to know if there is any advantage and improvement to the performance of a '91 300 SL if I would upgrade to a more sophisticated exhaust system? If so, any ideas as to what specific system? Thank you...

Most of the posts from the techs say to keep it stock. The engineering of the systems is excellent but compromises for noise and emissions. Do you have emissions testing in your area? We do and it is illegal to change from stock. If you pass, no problem. If you don't... big problem. I have not heard much about high performance exhaust for these models except to get a whole make over by Renntech or AMG or someone.
