Does anyone have a good source to purchase sheepskins? There are many manufacturers that all claim to have the BEST and certainly this cannot be true..Just wondering what has been your experience with manufacturers and what have you found that's best....:D

Dale,

This may sound like a stupid question...but I have no idea...
What do you mean with the sheepskin for a 129 SL???
Is it something typical american (like the car-bra)?

That's OK.....I live here and sometimes I don't get it either..After all, just HOW long does it take to elect a Preident and count the votes?????????But, be that as it may, they are seat covers that are made from sheep pelts. They come in many colors and a variety of grades....even the best grades are not all the same. They range in thickness from usually 3/4" to 1" and can vary from dealer to dealer as to the overall "finish" to them. They are warm in the winter, and cool in the summer and require only a limited amount of maintaince. I am interested as to who may have had experience with the various manufacturers as to the best quality. Thanks for the inquiry.:D

OK, Dale, thank you for explaining this. We had these sheepskins as well, but it has been a very long tome since I have seen the last "live" set of sheepskins in a car (must have been 15 years or so).
The sheepskins are not used here anymore...

Just curious - doesnt sheepskin collect dust?

DALE DORIA

Yes-----They can collect dust and they must be maintained. However, as my car is vacumed quite often, this would not be too much trouble. They do offer a cool seat in the summer and are quite comfortable in the winter. As always, there is a trade off somewhere.:D

Personally I prefer the electrical heated seats in the winter and plain leather in the summer. And as far as vacuuming the car goes: top down, windows down, and 200+km/h...(this vacuumed the coat that lied behind the seats out of my car :D.

Dale, good luck with your search; there should be some good skins available for your car somewhere.

I also have the heated seats.....however, my car is used extensivly in the spring-fall. Once the winter salt and road grime hits, the car is in the garage. My concern for the leather, is the sweat on it during the hot summer. I RARELY use the a/c as the top is down approximatly 99.99 percent of the time!:D

99,99% of the time???
I know I live in the wrong part of the world. The Netherlands is cold and wet. I hope I can do some serious topless driving when I am in the states (with my 300CE conv.).

The Dutch whether simply sucks...

That be 99.99 percent of time during the summer. We have little rain in the summer here in N.J., PLENTY of heat and humidity, but with the top down, cruising the ocean road..who cares????:D

For 99.99% we have humid, warm (read "hot") weather in Malaysia. To have sheepskin would not be appropriate as you would only make the environment less-dusty.

I stick with leather as it cools down much faster, comfy and easy to make it dust-free. Infact, it's constantly conditioned to be dust-free.

We just returned a set of SheepSkin covers for our 450SL. They were very comfortable however did not fit very well. And actually, I did not notice much improvement over the leather. After removing them, I actually like the leather better..

If you going to try them out, make sure there is a 30 day money-back guarantee. We bought ours from SheepSkin express. The service was Excellent and I would highly recommend them.

Just to deviate from this topic - does anyone find any difference between MBTex and Leather?

I personally find MBTex a little hard - and not as comfy as the leather. However, maintenance of the MBTex is much simpler than the leather.

MB-tex...that is the fake leather, isn't it?

If it is: MB-tex is fairly harsh compared to leather and personally I do not like the look of it (although the 2001 C class tex looks a lot better as the tex in the older models).
Leather is easy to maintain as well. I have no problem keeping the gray leather of my C class clean and I have just put some OEM MB leather care/cleaner (000 986 05 71) on all the leather parts of my 300CE interior. The black leather of the rear head rests (roll-bar) of that car turned white and the seats were fairly harsh (the car has barely been used the last 3 years). easy job

I don't have sheepskins but have heard that the backing sometimes defaces the leather under the covers.

If you are covering the seats becasue they are in bad shape you have nothing to worry about. If your seats are excellent you may cause damage to the leather, over time. I think you still have to condition the leather, keep it clean and remove the covers from time to time. Anyone to confirm this?

My wife had a set on her 190E for approximatly 9 years. We just sold the car, removed the skins, and the seats were PERFECT. However, they were not leather, but M-Tex. I have heard that they should be removed periodically for cleaning, and to restore the leather if needed......but I have not heard or seen any proof to this notion.:D

As MBenz said, MBtex is fake leather. So - it doesnt really have the sensitivity and care needed for genuine leathers. Tough stuff. :)

Check http://www.precisionauto.com. They seem to carry a very nice line of sheepskin covers, tailor made to fit, and in a variety of colors. Pricey though, about $500/set.
