Like The Metal Slips that attach to the side to pull out an after market one..maybe a screwdriver of some sort and some wirecutters/strippers with crimp ends and a crimper if you plan to replace it with another unit?

I forgot about this thread. I took some sheet metal and trimmed it to fit the slots in the stereo. Then I cut an angle to release the clips. Once you see how the latch mechanism works, it's pretty obvious how to shape the removal tool.

Could you please post a digital snap or scan from a flatbed scanner of these tools so that others can also have an idea how to make their own? Measurements would be helpful, too.

The flash washed the pics at close range. Kinda yellow and blurry without flash but it's the best I could do.

First pic shows tools against a tape measure. The other dimensions are based on the slot. I used aluminum from an old DIN stereo sleeve.

Second and third pics show the brass spring retainer from an angle. The tool engages a tab on the retainer. As you push in the tool the wedge moves the tab inward which retracts the retainer.

Fourth and fifth pics show the same from the top.

Fancier tools have a notch in the wedge and loops at the far end to use the tools to pull out the stereo. With these simpler tools I grip the cassette opening to pull out the stereo.
