Hello to the group!

I did not do one thing to the Mercedes this last week except drive! I have 793 miles to date and all is well.
It is a bit heavy on fuel so I will be working on the MPG issues. I have averaged 16 mpg hwy. I would like to know what the timing advance curve specifications are. Old school vets know what I am getting at, as I want to check to see if I have the proper advance at the proper rpm both mechanical and vacuum. Does any one know the specs?
Regards,
Bryan

According to the CD, for 73-74 280:

Static - 7 BTDC
Idle with vacuum - 4 ATDC
1500 wo vacuum - 13-17 BTDC
3000 wo vacuum - 31-35 BTDC
4500 wo vacuum - 37-41 BTDC

Hope this helps.

16 mpg isn't that bad. You might push it to 18 if you try hard and the carb is perfect.

In my last car -- a 1979 300CD--, I found that my performace and mpg increased when I switched to a high flow air filter from K&N and used mobil-1 synthetic oil. I used to keep accurate logs of how much I drove for work reasons, and both of these defintely showed a slight improvement. Also make sure that everything (like fan, wheels, and alternator) turns smoothely so that the engine's power is used as much as possible to turn the wheels and not working hard trying to turn a rusty pulley. From what I have seen, whatever you can use to keep the engine happy gets you better mpg and performance.
