I have holes behind the front wheels on my 450SL about 4" x 4" approx. It looks as if someone patched with oily cardboard and undercoated over it? I have not dug any of this out as of yet. What is the typical fix for rusted out areas behind and in front of the tires?

Another question: On the 450SL there are pockets behind the front tires for jacking purposes. This seems to be a problem area for this model. What is the proper fix for rusted areas here? My idea would be to take a hole saw about three inch diameter and cut the rocker rusted area away, then weld new metal back in? Thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You are on the right track. Cut out the old and weld in new. Keep the thickness of the new metal as least as thick as the original.
