My question is ,, is it an easy swap to any other radio? any off the shelf radio?

I had an '85 300TD (great car, unfortunately lost it in an accident...) Well, the radio broke, but it was about the only thing, which broke on this car. I think they all had problems with the radio. Anyway, I took it to a small car radio shop, selected a radio for about $100 and they installed it. No problems. Worked fine. I don't remember how much installation was. Some stores install for free, if you buy from them (they'll charge for some "custom" work on top of "free," but not much.) Almost any off the shelf unit will work. Some of the cheap ones cannot control your antenna, so buy the unit with antenna control function or just operate your antenna manually, if you want.

Is there an FAQ or detailed procedure for radio removal? My '85 300D radio is dead, but I already have a replacement if i could just install it.

OEM Becker radios are cheap on ebay. Just buy a used Becker as a direct plug-in. The model that came new was a 612. You can upgrade to the 754, or 780, which all directly swap with to modification.
