For all those that have Merc's with AM/FM Splitter/Amplifier modules behind the driver side rear pillar, and are experiencing AM reception problems (FM reception OK), I had been monkeying around with the spitter in my car for over a year. I'd loosen and tighten the coaxial cable connector and the thing would work fine with good AM reception, for a week or so. Then the poor reception would return and I'd have to repeat the process.
Then I read a post on this forum a couple months ago by someone (wish I could remember who it was so I could thank them) suggesting not only tightening the coaxial cable connector at the splitter, but also loosening the splitter mounting nut and retightening it to assure proper ground. Using a wrench with a swivel head, I actually removed the splitter and found the mounting/contact surfaces had oxidized somewhat. I used a fine emery cloth to remove the oxidation and reinstalled the splitter.
That was a couple months ago, and it's been working better than ever, ever since. I can actually, under proper weather conditions, receive Philadelphia AM radio stations when I am in Raleigh, NC. And here in Pennsylvania in my driveway I can receive Baltimore and sometime Richmond, VA AM stations. The splitter mounting nut was a pain to access and remove because of interferences, but it was doable. Hopefully it'll work for you too.
Best Wishes
