View Full Version : 2002 E 4Matic Wagon Radio Replacement - Options?

My 2002 E320 4Matic wagon (Bose, and no nav) does not have the rear CD changer - ordered without from factory - no omne ever added. Bought used. Radio has pixelation problem, as well.

So, seems reasonable to replace head unit and either (1) connect into the Bose amp and speakers (using preamp out of new head unit), or (2) new head unit and bypass the entire Bose amp.

Questions:
1. If connect to Bose amp will preamp out work sufficiently well? I had heard some had volume issues doing it this way.
2. If connect to Bose amp will the Sony CDX-GT610Ui work well? It is pretty toned-down in looks, is simple to use and has USB and iPod connections - good pricing, as well.
3, How big a deal is simply going the replace everything route? Are the Bose speakers useable if I bypass the Bose amp? If I replace everything, what are some recommendations for speakers?
4. If I install new headiunit with new speakers, without a separate amp, will I have enough volume and power? Sony 610 is rated at 15W and 45W total, I think ...

Would really appreciate everyone's thoughts - seems to be several options ... I know I don't want a head unit with a bunch of weird lighting ... something simple with button for radio stations - also, the USB and iPod inputs are way cool.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

OK - didn't get a lot of replies, so I ordered the Sony CDX-GT610Ui from Crutchfield ... will let everyone know how it works.

Thanks.

Hi,

No issues thus far - I had some wiring issues, but worked through them with Crutchfield folks who were very responsive and knew their stuff ... had some trouble getting to switched 12v, but found one - not best source - probably should have used the cigarette lighter ...

Nice radio, simple controls, lots of power - lots of options including radio, CD, USB, and power and data only iPod capability ... and, price was right.

Don't like the look all that much, but also better solution than MB "sponsored" equipment ... plus, the display works - something most of them didn't do on our $50-75K Benzs.
