Here are some vacuum diagrams to help you diagnose your W123 or W126 diesels. The 240D diagrams were looked up for a 83 year model, but should be pretty much the same for 82-85. I've also added some wiring and flow diagrams. Also note that there are year to year (and sometimes, throughout the year) changes and these diagrams may not reflect everything exactly as on your model. Here's a sample of these diagrams:

In reviewing the diagrams for the '85, it is apparent that this vehicle has a vacuum system that differs significantly from the '84 300SD. The changeover valve on the valve cover is controlling the transmission modulation again, something that the '84 does not have.

There is also a "cam plate" with a "valve" attached in the aforementioned diagrams. The '84 does not have this arrangement.

Just a word of caution. The vacuum systems did change frequently throughout the years. The '85 probably has the most changes of them all.

Edited to add 82 300D vacuum diagram and a few other things.

Edited to add a couple more diagrams and a link to Installing the Fast Start Glowplug kit (changing over from loop-style to pencil-style glowplugs).

Edited to add a couple more items including the injector parts breakdown.

Excellent information here. I've been dissecting my 240 and 300 for about a year now and going through all the long forgotten maintenance items that were neglected before I acquired the girls. Tho I kept them on the road, my weekends and these winters allow lots of time to bond and restore to a couple of nice looking and driving cars.

I've got a 1984 300D (non Turbo) that I need a vacuum diagram for. There's no egr valve and some of the components are different than a 1980 300D or a 1984 300D Turbo.

THE REASON: I purchased the car 4 years ago which had just been shipped from Guam (lots of rust). The guy who sold it to me told me it was originally from Germany (The cruise control knob is in German; Beschl./ Verzog.). I've always had trouble figuring out which parts to buy, 1984 parts for the body and 1980 parts for the engine.

The VIN# is WDB1231301A160935. The DMV did'nt even believe this was the correct number.

Anyone else out there own or have heard of such a Benz?

You have what's considered a Euro model. There are several on this site that have Euro models (my neighbor has one). There are small differences throughout, but all are non-turbos as you have seen.

Thanks Phantoms

I've been finding a few "Euro" posts in the last coupls of days and now realize I am in a select group of Benz owners who have to work that much harder to fix their cars. Think I solved my vacuum problem. I bought the rebuild kit for the piston vacuum pump and put everything together but still had problems stopping and turning off the car. Then I put a used brake booster on thinking that was the problem. NOPE! Turns out the small round gaskets they sent in the rebuild kit that seal the three check valves were too "short" and didn't seal against the cover of the pump.....8 hours of labor and a week of racking my brain all because of 2 cents worth of rubber, (I guess thats typical for a vacuum problem though). I also found out that if I need a replacement for the vacuum control valve on the injection pump I need to buy the one they put on the 190D in 1984, (I have the "metal" one with two inputs next to each other and the bleed off on the side).

Thanks again

I changed the oil filter this morning on my 85 300D and accidentally disconected the brown/blue hose, the one coming out of the fire wall, I can't figure, for the life of me, where to reconnect it. As a result the only way I can shut down the engine is with the stop lever.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I think you pretty much answered your own question. The hose that came off is the one that goes to the IP to the shutoff valve. It is at the very rear of the IP, right by the oil filter housing too.

Can someone tell me what exactly the "valve glow stater switch" and the "cam glow starter switch" are? Is this a funky technical name for the ignition switch (key)? Will I need this to make this citcuit function properly when the engine is installed in my Jeep?

Here in this diag what goes in 4 and 5 holes:
http://home.comcast.net/~phantoms/vacuum/egr_82_300d.jpg

I am thinking that maybe b (to transmission) should go in one hole and the line to the transmission should go in the other because someone mentioned some minimal transmission controlling is done by that box ?
Also I am wondering if you did send b directly to transmission, does that mean it is always under full vac (follow line from b to 62)? Or does 72 surge damper prevent that? Or is 62 supposed to prevent it. ? What is 62 "Orifice" for anyway?

thanks

Nothing goes in the #4 and #5 holes.

Don't attempt to reinvent the wheel. b goes to the transmission and it is not under full vac. The orifice, #63 limits the volume to the VCV and the VCV regulates the vacuum to the trans by bleeding a certain amount depending upon the rack position.

The #62 orifice simply restricts the volume to the circuit downstream. It's probably used to prevent a massive vacuum loss if a hose is disconnected or it cracks.

I strongly recommend that you eliminate the line that plugs into #1, eliminate the line that plugs into #2 and eliminate the line that plugs into #3. Much nicer underhood environment.

Thanks Brian. Before I rerouted last weekend I had lines going to all 5 holes. Unsurprisingly, Everything connected up and they were just extra sticks of line plugged in it seemed. But I was curious if there was a purpose.

Can anybody help to show me a 1992 300SD General Engine Vacuum diagram? I try to find a leak in the vaccum line that causes the engine continue to run after the switch is turned off. Does this kind of leak affect the A/C compressor to be turned on?
Also, I am seeking advices to remove and reinstall the instrument cluster. I also need to know if anyone knows any reputable individual who can recondition the instrument cluster for the 1992 300SD.

It's the vacuum portion of the Ignition Key switch assembly. When the switch is in the run or start position, the cam causes the vacuum to be disconnect from the shut off circuit of the Injection Pump. When the key is switched to off, the cam lets the valve open and connect the vacuum supply to the shut off circuit.

My supply pump is a replacement OEM that has four fittings although the car has five lines. Does anybody know how to determine which lines go where on the vacuum pump in the trunk? Right now I cannot get my interior locks to unlock (center console, door panel storage, etc.). One line is blue and the others are yellow with green stripes.

Does anybody have a diagram for this? Thanks.

Didja ever get this sorted out ? the green stripe indicates it's the _unlock_ side of the central locking , you need to be more specific about where in the cockpit you pulled it out as these tubes run all over underneath the carpet , lotsa joints underneath the black plastic covers under the passenger side front footwell , slide the seat all the way back and remove the carpets , vacuum up before playing with it .

Yellow/red is the _lock_ side of the system and the yellow/brown is for the vacuum resivoir in the trunk below the rear window ~ be gentle when touching the tubes as they can get minute cracks and leak all your vacuum away .

I recently purchased a 1981 300SD. I changed the oil and stopped an oil leak (yay crush washer!) I changed the secondary fuel filter and am changing the other tonight (I'm assuming these haven't been changed in a decade or so). I plan on replacing the engine mounts very soon (is there a good place to order OEM mounts?) which should take care of part of my problem. What needs the most effort is the transmission. From this thread, I have learned that I might just need to fix the vacuum in order to get the hard shifts to cease. I took it to a mechanic who suggested that I do a rebuild and replace the clutch ($1800 before labor). The guy's son suggested I seek the vacuum diagram which brings me to here. In the diagrams at the beginning of this page, it shows a line running from the vacuum damper to the automatic transmission. Under my hood, there is a plug coming out of the "T" on top of my vacuum damper instead of a line running to the tranny. What kind of hose should I use and where does the line go into my transmission? Thanks for all of your help, this forum is saving me thousands of dollars in my pursuit of a really cool car. Here are some pics, too:

vwnate1

You are correct ~ the tranny needs modulated vacuum and the right picture shows a hose end in midair ~ it is supposed to be connected to a thin hard plastic black colored tube that goes behind the engine to the tranny's modulator on the _right_ side .

It'll have a short bit of rubber hose at the lower ends that's blubbery and therefore leaky , replace it .

If you get a couple Meters of the correct size vacuum hose and replace all the short bits of vacuum hose under the hood , you'll reduce/eliminate vacuum leaks and vastly improve shifting .

Be VERY careful to only undo one hose at a time ! . any vacuum hose anywhere in the car that can be easily pulled off it's nipple or hard plastic tube , is bad and is leaking precious vacuum .

The mechanic who wants to rebuild your ttanny , is crooked so get another one , there's factory trained mechanics in independent Mercedes shops all across America , the entire tranny rebuild should be under $2K , mine was only $1,000.00 .

Before rebuilding , fix ALL vacuum leaks and then if it still flares when shifting
(slips) have the mechanic adjust the valve in top of the IP .

Good luck .

Thank you! It turns out the plastic tube going to my transmission was plugged into the vacuum circuit someplace else. There is vacuum hose coming out of my firewall on the drivers side that goes into a T. The side of the T had a little rubber hose that the black plastic tube was plugged into. I took the black plastic tube out and plugged it where it should go and plugged up the little rubber hose that previously housed it. Lo and Behold my tranny shifted at the 2 on my oil pressure gage (rpm gage has only worked once). I drove home and noticed a "clunk" when I downshift into first. It also dieseled for about 30 secs when I shut it off. I messed with the T joint that was plugged and accidentally broke it. I then used some tubing I had laying around (3/8" when I really need 11/32") for a quick fix, eliminating the T altogether like I read about in another post. Now the dieseling stopped, but I still have the clunk. Tomorrow afternoon I'm going to replace all the lines with new 11/32" tubing and hope it fixes the clunk.

Do take a look underneath the car for bad rubber flex discs at each end of the driveshaft as they clunk when they're about to shred .

Also , motor mounts get all gooey from the Diesel contaminated engine oil that leaks...

it's good practice to keep a clean engine .

These are very simple cars and so unusually easy to work on and do DIY stuff .

The hoses under the hood are 11/32 and I'm having a terrible time finding this size hose at the auto parts stores, Home Depot, or online (unless I want to buy 7-15 meters of the stuff or I want racing grade $6 a foot). Does anybody have a supplier?

I plan on changing my engine mounts as soon as they arrive, then I'm probably going to order the flex discs then take it in to have them changed. They seem just out of my grasp of auto repair...

The vacuum hose should be easy to find @ NAPA stores or the dealer , they're not as expen$ive as you might think for undercar parts .

As long as it fits tightly , you'll be O.K. .

The flex discs can be a real PIA , some cars have a two piece driveshaft that you can drop the center support on and this allows it to be short enough that you can position it ' Just So ' and -barely- sneak the disc out for replacement , as this job requires the car up off the ground 2' or more , maybe it's not a DIY job , I used four jack stands and a 2 ton trolley jack to raise it up .

As it turns out, it was the brake booster, not more vacuum hose that I need. Does anyone know where the "c" central lock from the brake booster line goes to? Thanks!

So I ended up combining two diagrams and so far it's working great. It's amazing how all of the vacuum tubes are cut perfectly to fit where they belong. The best is that what the seller thought was a lemon was in fact not! Thanks for all of your help!

I think I have found the new location for the Peter Schmid diagrams. http://www.peterschmidtransmission.com/vacuum.htm Erbid
