All I have to say is....

HOW?

My guess is some idiot brought the chair in thinking it didn't have any ferrous metal in it.

Ask about the dumb f___ who left an oxygen cylinder in the MRI room.

The results were not all that funny............

Did the magnets quench? Then the room would fill with helium and everyone would be talking like the chipmunks.

People will do the dumbest things!

Of course, there are plenty of times when stuff like that can be traced right back to management. "We have to make budget cuts. We don't need all of this training. Let's cut that."

The bulk of an MRI machine is made up of a huge superconducting electromagnet. Here's a cool page with pictures of MRIs with metal stuff stuck to them:

I used to work for GE Medical Systems.
We had a fork truck get sucked into a 1.5 Tesla magnet once at the factory. That was pretty interesting. The tires left black marks right up to the magnet. The magnet quenched.

The biggest problem I kept having was forgetting to remove my wallet before entering the magnet room. All the magnetic strips on the backs of my credit cards would get erased and my credit cards wouldn't work in a reader anymore.

Did they talk like chipmunks when the Liquid helium turned to gas (huge volume increase)?

I guess swapping video tapes with friends at work was out, too?:D

Did they talk like chipmunks when the Liquid helium turned to gas (huge volume increase)? At that time, our magnets used liquid nitrogen and liquid helium. Sort of a thermos bottle within a thermos bottle. The nitrogen was in the outer container and the helium in the inner one. Liquid nitrogen is much cheaper then liquid helium so we used the nitrogen to minimize the boiloff of the helium.

When a magnet quenches the danger is that the nitrogen and helium displace the oxygen in the air. Most people need air!

There are 2 different types of quench:
1) A "white" quench means you lost your liquid coolant and the magnet current went to zero.

2) A "black" quench means you lost your liquid coolant and the magnet burned up.
