We had a fork truck get sucked into a 1.5 Tesla magnet once at the factory. That was pretty interesting. The tires left black marks right up to the magnet. The magnet quenched. The biggest problem I kept having was forgetting to remove my wallet before entering the magnet room. Sort of a thermos bottle within a thermos bottle. The nitrogen was in the outer container and the helium in the inner one. Liquid nitrogen is much cheaper then liquid helium so we used the nitrogen to minimize the boiloff of the helium. When a magnet quenches the danger is that the nitrogen and helium displace the oxygen in the air. Most people need air! There are 2 different types of quench: 1) A "white" quench means you lost your liquid coolant and the magnet current went to zero. 2) A "black" quench means you lost your liquid coolant and the magnet burned up. |
