Hello,
I was wondering if someone around here can lend me their instrument cluster hooks.
I'm looking for the flat ones used for the W123.
I have tried used a coat hanger wire and it just bent and scratched the instrument cluster.
I don't feel like blowing $40 on getting the instrument cluster out.

Take out the panel under the dash, and reach up behind the cluster and push it out. It's only held in by a rubber "Friction" band. Even the right tool can do damage to the dash surrounding the cluster and scratch the cluster itself. The other risk is slipping off and pulling off the clear plastic lens.:) This method is free too.

I'll try this, I thought of it but figured there would be too much crap in the way...

If you've never removed the lower panel before, you will now find out if your oil gauge has ever leaked.;) My arm comes back covered in black oil when I push the cluster out. The gauge has been repaired, but the oil gets everywhere and is tough to clean up.

O_o
There is an oil line running to the instrument cluster?
The reason why the instrument cluster is coming out is because the oil gauge and the gas gauge are both sporadic.
and by sporadic I mean the gas gauge has never worked since I bought the car two years ago and the oil pressure gauge randomly jumps from 0 to where is should be back to zero...

You might be leaking back there then.:( There is a thin tube that runs oil to the back of the oil gauge. The fuel gauge may be bad due to a clogged or broken fuel level sending unit in your fuel tank. If that's the case you probably need to clean the tank screen too.
Do a search here on these issues. There are many threads posted that will explain how to deal with it in detail. Good luck.

Hey I just noticed your signature has added a 1988 300te. If that's the car we're discussing, and not a w123, I think the oil gauge is electric without a hard oil line. If that's the case all your issues could be a faulty ground or bad fuses.

i tried for a good half hour with my makeshift hooks, little to no success. Then, i used the pull out the panel method, and it took seconds.
The only problem is, the panel is being tricky to put back on. looks like someone else has been down there, too, and stripped my screws.
