View Full Version : OM617 fitting an intercooler
MBdieselFreak 04-06-2008, 09:23 PM hey dudes well i wanna start a tread on inter cooling an OM617 from a W123 or W126 i have both cars. Anyways i wanna find a way to inter cool the engine and i think i am up to something. I think maybe with an non turbo intake manifold and clocking the turbo differently i could probably inter cool my engine's . So yeah if you guys have any idea's or wanna get some idea's together i am open for suggestions! well yeah with a non turbo intake i could put an inter cooler in front of the Radiator and do some piping from the Turbo to the inter cooler to the non turbo intake i am wondering if a non Turbo intake manifold would clear the turbo if i clocked the turbo towards the inner fender or something.... anyways i am up to something but i do not know if i could put the banjo bolt in the hole of the crankcase vapors tube goes or something anyways give me some thoughts here or something tnx dude's i hope we come up with something! together!
OlBrenner 04-07-2008, 10:24 PM just based on looking at it I highly doubt the n/a manifold will fit with the turbo no matter how it's clocked. also the few 617 intercooled motors i've seen all had a custom or modified turbo intake manifold.
Brian Carlton 04-07-2008, 11:10 PM How about perusing this forum a bit and doing some reading and research what others have done in this regard................

It will fit. I currently have the W115 300D intake on my engine and the non-turbo W123 manifold will easily clear the turbo with an 1/2" to spare.
MBdieselFreak, please please PLEASE use some punctuation in your sentences!
Now that you have that taken care of, get rid of that micro-sized hot air intake and oil spewing breather!
No offense, but it looks like you have a lot of work that needs to be done before you consider an intercooler.
MBdieselFreak 04-08-2008, 10:54 PM Hey dude "forced induction" well yeah i can change all that, if you didnt know i am a high performance car mechanic.
I own my own Tuning/body garage and i only work on German cars or some GM chevy and ford cars or trucks only. so yeah man i know what i have to do on my own cars! that's what i do for a living...! (by the way on my w123 the intake and oil breather were temporary, i was waiting for a special oil catcher, I have done things to bring cold air in the engine compartment neer the air filter, but i will make a custom cold air intake, from the passenger fender going to the left corner of the bumper etc..... but that's for the W126's anyways.... so i might do it to the W123 too soo dont worry lets talk about intercooling a OM617engine '80-'85)
The pictures that i posted were for references to picture the engines, turbo's and manifold's... Anyways first of all i want to make that modif. for my W126 and i am probably going to use an air to air intercooler so if you could send me a pic of your set up that would be cool ! dude i could see how the N/A manifold fits.
that would be nice of you tnx man.
MBdieselFreak 04-09-2008, 12:02 AM HEY Forced dude! your W123 OM617 is manual! thats cool man! i give you a lot of credit for doing that. nice thermal wrap on your exhaust too but, Did you use a 240D flywheel ? Or you used the real 300D "euro" manual flywheel ?
MBdieselFreak 04-09-2008, 12:07 AM hey guys i might have an idea for a inter cooler set up!!!! What about using the stock intake manifold. But only clocking the turbo, and connect the turbo to the inter cooler and to the intake? I would have to use the stock connecting piece with the seal's, from between the turbo and manifold ...i think thats "doable" i think i am gonna try it in like a month, or so i am gonna figure this out....
ForcedInduction 04-09-2008, 12:41 AM by the way on my w123 the intake and oil breather were temporary, i was waiting for a special oil catcher, I have done things to bring cold air in the engine compartment near the air filter, but i will make a custom cold air intake, from the passenger fender going to the left corner of the bumper etc..... but that's for the W126's anyways....
Alright. Sorry if I came across as a bit of an ass but some people have this silly idea in their heads that a tiny K&N wannabe filter on the end of a tube is somehow a "performance" "cold air" intake and better than the stock cold air intake. Wade "Performance" (http://www.wadeperformanceproducts.com/) is a good example of somebody taking advantage of people who just don't know any better. I see that, like me, your air filter is just a temporary setup. I do admit to having a filter (two actually) on the end of a tube but I never claim it to be a "performance" or "cold air" intake, only a stopgap solution until I get a proper air filter set up.

I used the 240D flywheel as its roughly 10lbs lighter than the 300D manual FW.

Here is my current manifold from a 1975 W115 300D. The VNT is a tad smaller frame than the stock T3 but I'm fairly certain it will fit anyways. Its a bit messy but I'm in the process of refining everything down and getting rid of alot of that clutter.
MBdieselFreak 04-09-2008, 08:35 PM yeah well i will comment on this later on, i ripped my knee today and i am hurting bad ....ill give you news soon cya!

Perhaps this thread should be moved to the performance section ;)
raymason 04-24-2008, 01:52 AM Can you post a pic of where your EGT probe is and how you installed it?
