Check out this thread:

Covers exactly what you are looking for.
Hope this helps.
Hi There:
Go to www.kelleybluebook.com and check the retail value of the car and the trade in value. This would give you a good idea of what a dealer (trade in value) is willing to pay for the car and full retail.
Never pay more than full retail unless the car is something spectacular.
I hope this helps.
Aloha,
Eric
Lebenz 09-07-2001, 02:06 AM The comments in the thread referred to above are all good. Take careful note of everything stated as they are all possibilities. Maybe even eventualities. In addition there’s other stuff such as a so-called double engagement of the transmission. This occurs when in drive and reverse. It is annoying and there is a fix. At around 100 K miles the car stands a good chance of needing an exhaust system, or at least parts of it. The radiator necks in MB vehicles are known for cracking at around this mileage, the air conditioning is known to fail around here also. Have the tech remove a valve cover to note wear or sludge underneath the cover and around the valves. Under the vehicle, have them check for rust, accident damage, the condition of the bushings. Have them note any weeping seals. The maintenance records are imperative. At around 100-120K miles you are due for a major service – all fluids, filters, rotors, distributors (there are 2 each). Expect to spend around US $1,200 or so for a full service on it, baring any issues that are turned up. Some part of the fuel delivery system may want attention as well.
All this said, it is a wonderful car. I enjoy mine endlessly. I spent over a month looking for the right one, did a lot of research on this board and on the web in general prior to my search for one. When I found it, I had it shipped cross country (it was in Rochester and I’m in Seattle). I strongly suggest taking your time. Part of the value of the one I bought was a goooooood warranty.
Enjoy the hunt!
I spent about 5 months looking for mine, condition of exterior/interior, mechanical played a major for me, also I wanted mine in white or black and I didn't want saddle interior.
So after 5 months I found it and it was so worth it, I payed trade in value for mine and so far, knock on wood, it has been everything I ever imagined plus more. With 95k now it absolutly drives like new, whenver I drive my sisters new toyota it feels like toy car. The Benz E Class w124 has won many awards, it is regarged as one on the best cars made in 80's\90's. Take your time man, and just sit back nad wait for yours to come along.
Best of Luck!

Clauser1 09-13-2001, 10:08 PM Hi guys,
My hunt is over.First off,I thank
you all for your advise and responses.
As for the 400e,it didn't passes the
inspection.You guys are right about
the wiring harness. My mechanic and I
went to dealer very early in the morning.
I have to start the car stone cold.He said.
This is what he found out.
Smoke at start up(black)
Clacking noise, possible timing chain.
Whining sound when shift in reverse.
vibration when you step on the brakes.
For $2K more,I end up w/a black on
black 1995 E420. He gave me the go signal,
so I bought it.It has 93k.on the odometer,
but sounds like new.Its an awesome car.
It came with a bunch of reciepts from the
2 previous owners.Too bad the owner manual is
missing.Well in 4-5 days I'll have one.As
for now,I have to figure out what this
switches are for.I'm so EXITED!
Thanks again,
Manny

Lebenz 09-14-2001, 01:17 PM Manny,
Way to go! When you go in for service have them put redline synth tyranny fluid in. You will love the difference!
