starfighter 09-29-2001, 05:49 PM  Icaraba what in the heck happened there ?looks like the only things that somewhat survived that boo boo was the side view mirrors:eek:
Looks like the thing went under a truck trailer.
blaubenz_mb 09-29-2001, 09:29 PM ...actually it was a rollover accident. My friend who was driving way too fast, was distracted and rode up over the concrete divider and flipped the car over... She survived, but does not remember what happened...and has some significant problems now... the pictures are courtesy of the wrecking yard... Some advice: Don't try this at home!!
This is why I am not too thrilled about driving a convertible...sedans are much safer...your thoughts?
All I can say is that I'm glad she survived!
I hope she's able to recover fully...
starfighter 09-29-2001, 10:07 PM The thought of what here injuries might be scare me Strike that gives me the willys. I am really happy that she survived and did not remember what had happened. give her our best wishes for a speedy recovery.:(
MedMech 09-29-2001, 10:30 PM I will have to scan the picture's of my old GS400 that my wife was in when she encountered an idiot at 55+ MPH, head on! I was called to the scene by a bystander that somehow knew my number. The car was mangled but all four doors still opened and closed perfectly and most importantly my wife walked away. Now let's go to that thread on what we REALLY pay for. What would you rather be in a well engineered car or a KIA? Warranty or Life? That is the million dollar question. I would take a MB, Lexus, BMW or an equivlent with no radio, defroster ect. over a GM car any day!
That airbag shot looks horrible. I'm glad she survived. That rollbar seems intact and might have saved her head from scraping the pavement. Maybe a C-Coupe Kompressor with a solid roof, no matter how unhip and unpopular with the diehard Mercedes crowd, might be safer? :)

Ken300D 09-30-2001, 12:09 PM 1) Looks like a good car to put on EBay. :)
2) I saw the aftermath of a wreck in lanes of I-95 that are bordered by the sloping Jersey walls. Someone bumped a Miata slightly from behind and to one side, sending into the wall. Instead of bouncing off the wall (if it were flat) the Miata climbed the wall and flipped over. I think it was a stock Miata without any rollbar. Unfortunately the passenger did not survive.
There is little protection in a convertible from the actions of some idiot nearby. Seeing this type of thing day in and day out on my commute is the whole reason I bought that hunk of massive German steel known as the 300D. A lot of people along my commute hop on motorcycles because they are allowed in HOV lanes. I say 15-30 minutes saved a day isn't worth the extreme risk.
Very glad some of the safety features of the MB prevented a fatality here. Hope she is steadily recovering....

Kenn300D, of course you need to add that this vehicle has some normal everyday wear and tear... but the motor runs well...motor refering to the air conditioning blower motor... :D
Seriously, I wonder how another car would have stood up to that kind of an accident. Especially another convertable... I drive a Mercedes-Benz for a reason. Most people roll their eyes at me when I say I drive a Mercedes but in fact I drive these cars because they are one of the safest cars on the planet. Period. One thing I would like to find out is how fast the car was traveling when the accident occured...something tells me it was over 100mph.
But yes...recovery is going well and she is expected to make, surprisingly enough, a full recovery...thanks mostly in part to the which gave up it live to save her's...
But whatever and whereever you drive remember this heartfelt reminder: "Drive Safely".
jjrodger 09-30-2001, 05:21 PM I'm sure MBenz could straighten that thing out in no time.
Yeah, but Steve won't wash it so it'll be a dirty R230.

public enemy 09-30-2001, 09:26 PM Those A-pillars bented down almost completely. I read all the time in various car descriptions of convertibles how the manufacturers design the A-pillars to serve as roll bars in case of a rollover. I personally never bought this nonsense. There is no way on earth a couple of A-pillars made up of folded sheetmetal are going to tolerate 1.5-2 tons of car plus any extra weight the car carries when it becomes airborn and slams down on the ground on those A-pillars. I do not care if it is an MB, a Volvo, a BMW or what have you. The only thing that helped in this case and (Kudos should go out to MB for using it) is the rear roll bar. I wish the driver of this car a quick recovery, but in my humble opinion she ows her life 40% to the passive safety of the MB and 60% to pure luck.
MBenzNL 10-09-2001, 08:25 PM I am amazed that your friend got out of the car alive! She has been very lucky...
The roll-bar in the rear held up pretty well and probably saved the drivers/her life...
I don't think I will be able to make either a R129 or R230 out of this, but if I saw a car like that on my local junkyard, I would have taken off the sidemirrors directly.
J Irwan 10-09-2001, 10:15 PM Glad, you friend Could make it..
It is a horrible accident..
Best of Luck to her...
Buckle Up and Safe driving everyone....;)
And Steve, And I thought that you could make something out of it :D:D:D.
Regardz,
J Irwan
bobbyv 10-10-2001, 12:11 AM looks like the rollbar did its job. Is that the hood wrapped over the passenger compartment?
i prefer sedans for this reason. And a B-pillar adds so much strength also (i.e., some coupes do not have B-pillars).
/8 200 10-10-2001, 08:05 AM It makes the question : Does the dash get wrecked replacing the airbag ? Sound really silly.
Hope your friend recovers completely.
Drive safe everyone

I think that by definition a coupe does not have B-pillars. There's been a rash of 2-door cars with b-pillars called coupes these days but purists won't hear of it.

public enemy 08-25-2002, 04:00 AM This is an old thread and the person who posted it has probably moved the pictures out of the server.

Question answered...
Most people don't keep pictures in the server indefinitely...pics take a commanding amount of space, and ISPs don't allocate unlimited drive space to subscribers. The space they do ration out costs money, and the more space you need, the more expensive it gets. So it's makes economic sense to remove outdated pics as new ones get added.
Unfortunately, the URL links to the old pics still exist on many of these threads, so when you pull up one of these threads, you will see the empty boxes where the pics would normally reside.
