Just installed the 6.5" Sony Xplod speakers in the rear of my 1991 190E and they fit perfectly with NO modification. Plus, they sound great!

Now, if I could just find something to fit in the front.

sony xplods 4.5" are an easy drop in for the dash speakers. You have to remove the mounting tabs and solder the mercedes connectors to your new speakers. I recently did this on mine and they worked out just fine.

Well, I wondered about that -- but I haven't been able to find the 4.5s.

I think there are a lot of 190's out there looking for better speakers without taking a hack saw and tin snips to the rear deck. I am certainly one and thanks for the tip. I went to the Crutchfield site and saw a number of Sony 6.5 speakers listed under MB 190E. Can you tell me the exact model number of the Xplode speakers? I take it that they are the best to get (so far) for a "drop-in" fit. I assume the magnet is not big enough to cause any problems with fitment. Where did you get them? What was the cost? I have yet to tackle the speakers, so I am curious about this MB electrical connector I keep hearing about. Do you just clip off the MB connector and make a new one for non-MB speakers? Thanks.

With regard to the connectors, they are simply a 2 pin polarized connector that are soldered to the speakers. Simply clip or un-solder the mercedes connector from the original speaker(keep in mind that the green-black wire is positve-it will be marked on the back of the speaker) and solder the wires with connector to the new speakers(red being positive on the Xplods). Re-connect the speakers to the female end of the conector in the dash and your'e done.

If your 190e has an active bass system, (generally 91 and up) there will two sets of connectors on the driver side dash speaker.

They are electrically isolated from each other, and I don't really know what the second one is for. I left it disconnected and everything seems to work just fine. Hope this helps.

FYI the extra wires are for a dual voice coil speaker used when the factory cell phone is fitted. The second voice coil allows the phone to work simultaniously with the stereo. Buy the way another option for a good 4" speaker is a alpine ( they only make one).
