Hi all;

just looked at a lovely 280SL for sale, but the heater controls were all busted, and the replacement of these looks like trouble. the guy selling the car has the replacement parts, but it would appear that the dash needs to come off to get to the heater, ventilation, defrost controls. Has anyone ever done this? is it easier to build a new car around the replacement parts than to tear into the old car and replace them? Any hints?

thanks

tom

If the replacement levers are the origional type of levers, it is a fair job to replace them. Replacing mine in my 230SL required removing the glove box, clock, blower control, radio dash pannel, and the radio speaker grill. With all of that off, it is posible to replace and adjust the levers but it is still not a quick or easy task.

Next question is why the levers were broken? The heater valve is probably frozen ... another interesting task and the other cables may need lubricating.

This is a job that takes time but is posible.
