View Full Version : MB original paint colors
mrwith 04-21-2002, 06:17 AM I thought it would be interesting to share the color of our cars with each other.
My 1980 still has the original paint.
Code: DB-476 (Golden Brown)
Most of my friends tell me it looks like someone took a crap on my car. I'm curious to know if anyone else has this color?
Does anyone know what colors were rare or special order only? I think it would be cool to see what is common and uncommon between us.
Mike
mrwith 04-21-2002, 06:31 AM I just did some research at this website and found out that my color (DB-476 Golden Brown) was only offered for three years (1980-1982). Anyway, I thought this was an interesting website and wanted to pass it on.

Kyle Blackmore 04-21-2002, 11:36 AM Hi Mike, my 1980 is 881,thistle green metallic clearcoat. It doesn't seem to be a very common colour as I've only seen three other cars with that shade since I bought mine 1 1/2 years ago.
brandoncrone 04-21-2002, 11:54 AM Ok, I agree that the green is very uncommon. In fact I've never seen one. I went to that paintscratch website, I can't believe all of the available colors for my 79. I'm not sure which color is on my car, is there a place on the car that lists the color code??
Its either English Red or Brilliant Red Metallic.
I think its Brilliant Red, because it is a metallic paint.
I've only seen one other car this color and my 300D has been in the family for 6 years.
mrwith 04-21-2002, 02:23 PM Brandon--
I believe that the paint code is on a plate that is near the radiator. It should be something like:
DB-###
If I am wrong about this can someone else provide the correct information?
mike
wilton 04-21-2002, 02:35 PM My 81 300D is Ivory (623); 91 350SDL is Black (040); 80 240D was Cactus Green (Don't remember the #).
Steve019 04-21-2002, 03:13 PM My '76 was originally Nickel Green, sort of a yelow-green. I repainted with Deep Green, dark-green. Deep Green was also a '76 color. I found the colors in a paint book at the body shop supply house. They had color books dating back to the 50's
I am looking at a 1980 280E that is sort of a metalic silver/gold (yuk). If I buy it I will probably re-paint with a straight silver from that year.
brandoncrone 04-21-2002, 06:40 PM Thank You everyone.
I've always wondered what the color of the car is called and where to find the code.
Actually on the plate that is attached to the radiator support, there is no DB-***, There is just 525G, which is the Brilliant Red Metallic. And that is what appears to be on the car. Some of the clearcoat is coming of on the hood and roof. Looks like someone repainted it and didn't do that good of a job. Someday when I have a garage of my own, I plan to give her a fresh coat!!
Thanks again!
mikemover 04-21-2002, 08:51 PM Mine is light ivory, #623...pretty common, but I like it. My girlfriend's mother just bought the one I had posted about in the "cars" forum, and it's #624 yellow.
I like the metallic greens and the lighter shades of blues as well...Maybe I'll find an SD or TD in one of those shades someday! :D

rickjordan 04-21-2002, 09:33 PM My '80 SD is champagne metallic #DB-473, and my '83 TD is Silver blue metallic #DB-930.
dc88168 04-21-2002, 09:55 PM My 1985 300D Turbo is "mid-night blue" color, still in very good condition.

Jeepboy 04-22-2002, 10:33 PM Hi Mike~
I have a 1983 300D and its painted Astral Silver which is orginal. I had to look through a lot of diesel benz's before i found this one. While that color has been on benz's forever it seems it was hard for me to find this one.
Interesting that my best friend and I drove the car and spent a night at her brothers house he asked me a few questions about the car like gas mileage, was the turbo diesel the top of the model that year, and was that color (Astral Silver) the only color on those cars those years? Of course it wasn't.
atombaum 03-07-2004, 09:06 AM Are there any on-line photos of what "DB 880 Cactus Green" looks like on a car? The various paint web sites don't show the colors accurately. I'm thinking of painting my 1982 W123 240D (currently the original DB 737 "Classic White").

N8Scafe 03-07-2004, 12:44 PM Mine's DB-867 "Caledonia Green", although the paint's faded a bit, so that touchup paint wouldn't do me much good...
It's a very pale green, and is what originally caught my wife's eye. She saw the car, said, "Ooh, I love that color!" Then we saw the FOR SALE sign in the window. We owned it two days later. I still get comments from people on the unusual color. Seems to be more popular with women than men, and that's all right with me. ;)
Anyway, I've only seen a couple of MB's with my color, and one lives about half a mile from me, which is kind of funny.

atombaum 03-07-2004, 12:54 PM N8Scafe,
Thanks for posting that photo. That color is what I thought Cactus Green was. I guess I like Caledonia Green too. I'm not sure Caledonia Green was an option for 1982. I checked with paintscratch.com and it was not listed for 1982. I'd still like to see a DB 880 Cactus Green car if anyone has one. Yes, I just went back to paintscratch and Caledonia Green was available for 1977. Your car looks more like their swatch of "Silver Green Metallic Clearcoat".

N8Scafe 03-07-2004, 01:08 PM I actually thought mine looked more like Cypress Green, but then I checked the color code. Assuming paintscratch is correct, it's Caledonia Green.
vwbuge 03-07-2004, 05:47 PM #355---Diamond Blue Metallic
atombaum 03-07-2004, 06:10 PM I found this shot of what is supposed to be DB 880 Cactus Green. It looks a little more intense than Caledonia Green.
ForcedInduction 03-07-2004, 06:33 PM Mine is Pastel Grey, DB-740, but it looks more like Classic white or Light Ivory.
atombaum 03-07-2004, 08:14 PM Well, here is the car that I am thinking of painting DB 880 Cactus Green. It currently has 310,000 miles. It is (and always has been) DB 737 Classic White. Were certain colors more common to a particular region? It seems that when these were roming the planet with more frequency, most of the ones around here were Classic White. About 2,000 more miles and it will qualify for its second high mileage grille badge. The 500,000km one. Whoopie!
H-townbenzoboy 03-08-2004, 01:27 AM DB-881 thistle green metallic. This is a rare W126, it has a green leather interior too.

Full detail is coming soon --- see if I can get it to shine up a bit.

This is one place to see what most of the codes represent.

Either Biscayne Blue or labrador blue, depending on which site you believe..
TurboDawgs 12-16-2004, 11:26 PM The 78 300D is Cayenne Orange... We call her Pumpkin or as her Tag says... 1UglyMB (been told this is not a common color)
The 91 350SDL is Champagne... I have to look up the correct color for it...
The 75 240D is Dark Blue..
A 1978 300D in 606G Maple Yellow. It was a popular color back then. There are about six W123's here in town of the same color. With one diesel station in a town of 5000, it has made for a couple of comical moments.
BodhiBenz1987 12-17-2004, 12:03 AM Mine ('87 300D) is DB-147 Arctic White. I actually don't see a whole lot of them around, but now and then. I would guess it's not too rare a color. I love the look of it, though ... it stands out in a crowd.
Breckman99 12-17-2004, 12:26 AM My exterior is listed as Ascot Gray (751). How common of a color is this on a W126? I don't think I have ever seen a 126 with the same color, only 123 cars. When I bought it the owner told me it was a special factory order color, one of the very reasons I bought the car! How true is this? Does anybody have any information to back this up? I love the color, and someday plan to have it professionally repainted. It is kind of cool; looks blue sometimes, looks gray other times, and all different shades between! Not like those chameleon car colors, but in a good way.
Another strange note, that site that lists the car options states that mine should have been a California model with out a first aid kit....... Hmmmm. When I bought it from the second owner (*first owner was the dealership in AZ) it had the federal intake/exhaust! It also includes a first aid kit. Kind of makes me wonder about the accuracy of the site - or the dealer had a conversion done? What are your thoughts on this??
tenknots 12-17-2004, 08:30 AM The original window sticker on my 1981 SD says Walnut Brown. The PO, who bought it new, said it was a rare color. It's fading, but still shines up nice.
rs899 12-17-2004, 08:42 AM I believe I have the notorious Code: DB-476 (Golden Brown) on my 80 300SD. Some days I can tolerate it , some days it makes me want to grab all the spray cans in the garage and go to town on it.
The 240D is Light Ivory, a tolerable if not great color. The 300D is recovering from Russet Brown. I put a coat of GM Flame Red on her- looks pretty much like Signal Red (it was my wife's idea).
Rick
seafood54 12-17-2004, 10:57 AM My TD suffers from Russet Brown as well.... I've seen so many pink MB's running around, but searching those paint sites, I don't seem to find any pink at all.. Maybe I've been drinking a bit too much lately, and BTW, I'm NOT thinking of painting any of mine pink, but my daughter is considering
Franko in Oh..hi..oh
Benster Tom 12-17-2004, 11:06 AM Interesting thread, i'm curious if your going to paint your car, who other than a MB Paint and Body shop does great work. What is a reasonable price, for say a 123 and 126. My car is Black. I guess thats a standard for all black cars, or does MB have a specific black?
Pete Burton 12-17-2004, 11:22 AM My car is blue. I think that's what I'll name it, "Blue" or "Blau". Frau Blau. ;)
PatrickW 12-17-2004, 05:42 PM I always thought my car was "China" Blue, but it turns out it's really "Marine" Blue. :)
