I'm changing out my original radio in my 1985 500SEL, and I know I want to disconnect the battery first- what, if anything, is this going to affect? Are there any maintained computer settings that will be erased?

I guess I'm asking, is this okay to do?

Thanks,

James

No you won't hurt anything to disconnect the battery. However do you have a wiring diagram for the factory wires to install the new radio? If not you are going to want to leave the battery connected so you can test for a constant, ignition, ground and illumination with a voltmeter. You can use a AA or 9V battery to test speaker pairs too, you will hear a pop from the speaker when you put the battery on the right speaker leads. Just be carefull about the exposed wires if you leave the battery connected. If I am just doing a radio install I don't disconnect the battery. Let me know if you need a wiring diagram, I might have one for your car. Good luck.
PS: I am a MECP certified installer.
