View Full Version : GTG for Nor Cal, Oregon, Northern Nevada,

Ken Downing

Well guys.. I live in Yreka Calif.. No not Eureka.. I live on I-5 just south of Ashland Oregon... in a small old gold mining town.. About 350 or so miles north of SF.. SAC.. 350 or so miles South of Portland... 275 or so from Reno.. Get your maps out..

I can get us a good rate on an older motel.. Clean but older.. Park your car under cover in front of the room.. all rooms in a row.. Set in the room watch the car and talk to every one that drops by to see your ride.. Perhaps a BBQ... A great drive into the high country with no or very little traffic.. Lunch in the back country.. Will mark your maps for trips along the Salmon, Trinity, Klamath, Rouge, rivers.. Day trip to Crater Lake and Diamond lake..

I think it would be fun for some of us here in this area to get to meet and spend a little time looking at the cars and things..

So how you some of you like to make it here in the spring.. Perhaps April, May or June..

I say get together and meet regardless of the number.

As you know, we've had many GTG's in So. Cal., and the number of people attending has ranged from more than 2 dozen to maybe 6 guys. They're all fun. With smaller numbers, you get to sit down and really talk to each other, like over lunch or even a cup of coffee.

I've even met one or two members separately for dinner, lunch, had them over to my house, went on a picnic with one guy and his wife and kids.

It's just a great way to spend some time with others who love to talk about their cars. And you know with me, I can talk and talk and talk for hours about only two things: my dog and my Mercedes!  :D ;) :p

Paul - I've been wanting to join the SoCals for one of your meets, but the timing hasn't been right on the two I remember so far. I have been thinking it would be nice to meet up with you, John, David, Alon, Mike and the rest of the long-time SoCal regulars. The meets certainly sound like fun.

A NorCal/Oregon meet would also be fun - there are certainly some great spots for meeting places up here.

I would vote for a spring meet, or anytime when trout season is on. I haven't been trout fishing in years and that area of the country would seem like a great place to be doing some.

A little OT, but this is one of the best areas in the country for trout fishing! I have spent many happy (and frustrating) hours flyfishing near Yreka. The Upper Sac has huge browns and rainbows, the Trinity can get monster steelhead, and Diamond Lake has great rainbows. The Shakespeare Festival in Ashland is also a DO NOT MISS. Climbing Mt. Shasta is an experience I shall never forget, highly recommended. Hours of playtime fun for all! Oh yeah, and miles of uncrowded highway to take the old Tommassini (or Colnago) out for a spin.

I'll throw my name into the pot also...
Someone has to represent Central Oregon and the high desert...;)
BTW - Maybe I should do a remedial fly fishing course while we're down... You know, help those that want it to sharpen their skills a little:)

Depending on the timing, I'd be interested. I'd just have to give a "definate maybe" for now.
This is what I tried to pull together last spring/summer, but it didn't work out. Ended up with just a half dozen of us meeting up here in washington state. It was fun, but would have liked to go to a meet where more would be there.:)

This is going to happen... We are thinking April.. I need to talk to the people that run the motel.. Its older.. But clean.. Has a long cover in front of all the rooms.. so all cars will be parked under cover in front of your room..... It will happen rain or shine.. I will post a date just after the first of the year..

We would be interested possibly, also. We just returned from a weekend meet with 2 SECs in Eureka, CA. We are from Seattle and the 2 SECs were from Portland. Had a great trip even though it rained. The drive is what makes it worth it. These cars are made to DRIVE.

Ken Downing
01-04-2003, 09:55 AM
Ok... Here is what we have come up with..

Date... April 26-27 Rain or shine..

Location.. Yreka Calif.. Thats on I-5 100 miles north of Redding Ca, and 50 miles south of Medford Ore..

Meeting at .... Wayside Inn 1235 South Main St.. Yreka, Ca..96097

Phone.. 530-842- 4412

Call about your rooms any time but sooner the better.. Talk to Sandy... This is an older but clean motel... Parking for most will be under cover with your car in front of your room.... There are 26 rooms with parking under cover and 15 with out cover..

This GTG is about cars and people... We want to meet and see cars.. Not worry about price.... So I have talked to Sandy and if you tell her its for the Mercedes GTG the price for two will be... $32 per night... That should be in the price range of every one so Price should not be a problem for any one... Call the motel as soon as you are sure you can make it..

Any one wanting to come sooner or stay longer is welcome.. Sandy said the price would be the same..

I really do not think any one can beat that for a weekend get away with Mercedes friends..

While we are together we will talk about doing it again..

Over the years my wife and I have had lots of meets here.. Cars and motorcycles... We take bets how long it will be until we hear from some one that they want to stay in a room that cost more..

Here are two places..

1. Amerihost Inn.. 530-841-1300 About 1 mile south of Wayside Inn.

2. Miners Inn & Convention Center.. 530-842-4355... About 1 mile north..

You are on your own at these places as far as price ect..

All 3 have places to eat a short walk from them..

My wife won the bet.. I said at least a day.. She said less than a day.. Guess I am buying dinner..

01-12-2003, 10:31 AM
Glad to hear lots are trying to make it here.. We do under stand if you can not make it.. But be sure to talk it up on other parts of the board or with friends..

While we are together we can decide if we want to do it again in this area.. Yreka, Weed, or Mt. Shasta.. This is really a central spot for the West and easy to get to from 7 western states.. We have little traffic here and lots to see.. It is some thing that really takes little planing as we and our cars are the main reason we want to get to gether... And we can set a date for next year then... That will give every one a year or so to make plans next time..

Sorry to be slow with the answer.. Storm came thu here.. lost phone service.. got it but server was down.. got tons of e-mail when server came back.. got 4 with virus and had to work thru that.. I am not a computer person so took some time.. Seems all is fine .. Very happy I keep the anti-virus protection updated..

I did stop by and talk to the new managers... Every thing is the same except for the price.. Price for one in a room is 33 and two is 41.. They seem like nice couple.. seems Sandy kind of left them a mess but they are working thru it..

So we are still on for April 26 - 27

Phone # for the Wayside Inn is. 1-800-795-7974
As I said before this is an older motel with parking under cover..

For those that want to stay at a newer place there is

Miners Inn 530-842-4355
Amerihost Inn 530-841-1300

Hope you can make it..

We have no firm plans.. But we have lots of plans depending on how many and when they show... There are lots of rides to take here in Siskiyou county.. If you are early we will mark one on your map.. and you can take it.. We do plan for all of us to get together for dinner some place on Sat. evening .. But we can talk about what we want.. Sunday morning we were planning a breakfast together and perhaps a ride for those that do not have to get going to fast..

This is really a first time for us to meet with some of the people we have on the board.. and we will talk about doing it again... And make more plans for next time..

The motel will have my Cell Phone # so call when you get here whitch ever day.. If any of you come on Fri. evening.. We will also plan a dinner out.. Just give us a call.. Also my land line # is listed in the phone book.. Ken and Letha Downing 842-7918.. However you have to leave a message on that line.. No Phones ring so we only know some one is calling if you start talking...

Greetings- I have made my reservations to attend.

Ken- I've eyed the map to Yreka from the SF Bay Area- - was wondering if the 5 takes up "over" a snow covered mountain or two eventually to Yreka....of does the 5 keep us down low between the mountains?

I ask since I may need to have chains- - just in case...

Thanks
-fad

Ken Downing
04-22-2003, 02:58 PM
Comming from the south on I-5 you will have to come over Black Butte pass at the town of Mt. Shasta.. its about 3900 or so feet..

Comming from the north on I-5 you will have to come over the Siskiyou Pass at just over 4000 ft..

Odds are you will not need chains.. However we never travel with out them.. Have not used them in 8 years but the weather we are having now is a little different.. The roads are warm so if there is snow.. It will be gone very fast and should last on the roads only a few hours.. So I would throw them in.. But odds are you will not use them.. There is little chance there will be snow in the Shasta Valley where Yreka is.. We are lower (about 2600 ft.) and the high mountians around us keep the storms from getting us..

Just a couple days left... The weather is in fact great for our meeting of friends.. Days in the 50's and evenings near freezing, Kind of like I thought it might be.. We may have evening snow showers.. However odds are they will not stay on the ground as its warm... As I-5 is the main route in the west it will be open.. It snows every year at this time here.. I know because every year I have snow on the cherry trees in the back yard while they are in bloom..

Our parking at the motel is under cover in front of the rooms.. So we can look at the cars and talk with out getting wet.. (What this meeting is all about) We are planning to go to a local spot for dinner.. I will try to get a guess of how many from the motel this evening.. There is a coffee shop at the motel.. Quick stop across the street.. So every thing is just right for us with this weather.. Perhaps a little snow to look at on the hills..

We are really looking forward to seeing all of you that make the trip.. and some from here in the area..
