I'm trying to determine the exact paint code for my '88 560sl. I want to know what the "exact" name is so I can describe it. Right now it's listed on ebay (check it out... it's a great deal)

According to www.paintscratch.com it's Black Pearl Metallic Clearcoat (DB-199).

On the radiator plate the paint code will be a 3-digit number that shows up twice (unless the car's a two-tone, in which case there will be two different paint codes).

I happen to have a Color & Upholstery Guide/Brochure from 1988. Paint code 199 is indeed Black Pearl, which is a metallic finish. Upholstry code 278 is Grey Leather. Those are the "official" names from Mercedes.
