View Full Version : 500E/E500 West Coast GTG

Well I know many of us in the Southern half of California have talked about meeting up and comparing notes so now I want to know if maybe we should have a second big 500E GTG that includes California, Arizona, Vegas and all the way up into Canada.

Obviously a cental location would be best and we would need to locate a reasonable Hotel (Group Rate) and places to drive and just park our cars and chat. It would be cool if it could be a 2 Day event (which I know will require some of us to take a day off) to make it worth the trip. I'm thinking we might also consider getting a couple of vendors such as Bergwerks and Rentech West involved so that those interested can talk first hand about performance upgrades.;)

I can assist with bargaining a hotel group rate if others can suggest where to call in the location we choose. I would hope others can chime in regarding Parks or Parking lots that would accomodate us.

I left the dates open to allow everyone to provide their input so as we can include everyone in this GTG!

Your thoughts and comments are appreciated.

Placo: need2speed will be south of the 49th in the vicinity of Utah, Nevada and California in May. Diane and I would be tickled to meet up with others either before May 16th or after May 23, FWIW.

I'll keep watchin this thread. :D

Dean,

Wow, that would be awesome to be able to include you at the GTG. I'm assuming you will be here the weekends before and after the dates mentioned.

Maybe May 24th - 25th, anyone else interested?

We'd love to come, but will probably not be able to make anything outside of SoCal given other commitments at home until mid-June.

We'll monitor the thread and see what we can do if a place/date are selected.

I just realized this weekend is Memorial Day weekend.

I personally don't have plans that weekend and I know I have a day off which works out great.

Does everyone else have the Holiday off?

Regarding location, I think it will really depend on how many from Canada, Washington, Nevada and Arizona are interested. If there is interest from all locations then maybe Lake Tahoe or Sacramento would be viable options. If those regions don't take interest maybe SLO would be a prime location. Lets wait and see!

BTW, my goal............beat the East Coast 500E GTG last year!:D ;)

I'd be interested, especially in the SLO area, becaue I have a step-son in college there, but I think Memoriaal Day weekend would be terrible for driving any distances.
Is there another weekend that mifght work, possibly in April?

Sounds like Memorial Day won't work for many and Tom definitely has a point about traffic issues.

How about the weekend of May 10 & 11?

Dean,

Will you be in the area that weekend, or possibly the following weekend?

So far I've only heard from California members, lets hold off on location until we know who can and can't attend.

So far May 10 & 11 looks good, as long as it isn't too far away from SB since we'll be travelling with our baby.

Dean- I take it you're doing Silver State? If so, what class are you entering in?

BTW: ButtonWillow was a blast this weekend. Even with the 600SL rotors "cryo" treated and Porterfields, I "cooked" the rotors and warped them. I really need to get a brake-duct in there . . .

Looks like May 10 & 11th works for most everyone. We're starting to get closer to the date now so lets set up this event!

Please add to below:
Everyone meet at SLO Saturday late morning (we'll need a good park or parking lot). Have lunch at predesignated area and then talk cars for the rest of the afternoon into the evening (maybe plan a drive or something similar) Stay at a predisignated hotel/motel.
Wake up very early Sunday Morning and go for a drive! :D Have breakfast together and chat until noon. Everyone starts driving back home. If everyone agrees we need to start finding locations for the Park, Hotel and the Sunday Drive.

Lets also get a list going for those who are definitely going so we can plan the group rates.

Unfortunately, I cannot stay-over Saturday night (leaving for JAX Sunday morning).

Since most of us are coming from the SF Bay Area, how about we meet at the west-end junction of Highway 46 and 101 (just past Paso Robles, town of Templeton, Exit says "Cambria").

If we meet between 3pm-4pm, it is an absolutely beautiful western drive up the Coastal Range and down into the town of Harmony/Cambria.
Breathtaking views & vistas, even if you're travelling close to triple digits.

More importantly, the sweepers are incredible.

From there we turn left/south onto Highway 101 have dinner either in Harmony (Pasta Factory), Cayucus (The Sea Shanty), or Morro Bay (Taco Temple- preferred!).

Follow Highway 101 back into San Luis Obispo for a late check-in.

I guarantee you'll all love it.

For those of you who take Interstate 5 down, you can catch the 41 towards Shandon, and on the way, stop by the James Dean Memorial at the junction of Highway 46 and Highway 41 in Cholame.

A befitting place for our Porsche assembled cars.

Continue on 46 towards Paso Robles, get onto Highway 101 South towards San Luis Obispo. Take the Highway 46 West towards Cambria/Hearst Castle exit. We'll all be meeting down there as you turn RIGHT/WEST onto Highway 46.

That sounds like a great drive Neil.

If everyone likes the sound of this drive then why don't we plan on meeting in Templeton around 4PM on Saturday or sooner for anyone who has the day free (like me ;) ).

After the drive I thought rather than back tracking to SLO why don't we stay near Morro Bay? Is this ok with everyone else?

Carl,

If your coming can you bring some literature and information for products pertaining to the 500E/E500?

Here's a suggestion for Sunday, esp. if you all stay in Morro Bay.

Back-track North on Highway 1 and then take "Santa Rosa Creek Road" north to San Simeon. Have lunch in San Simeon and either take Highway 1 or Highway 46 back to the Bay Area.

Check it out "Santa Rosa Creek Road" here (it's only 26-miles):

I have Sat free- and can meet up around 10am-1030am Sat morning....

We can set up/sched. a 10am-1030am: meet/ chat/ drive>>>

then continuing on Sat sched. a lunch (some can join in at lunch depending on arrival)

then sched a dinner and evening chat session (some can join in on the party at dinner)

along those lines we can sched Sun Breakfast and chat then its back home for us all!

The specifics of geography and lodging/ the planning I'll leave up to Afshin and Neil.

I'd like to have covered parking-overnight - and it appears to be not available in SLO at all

- - perhaps in Morro Bay we can get lucky with accomodations w/ this amenity?

fyi- Scott may most likely NOT attend since his car is not together- - based upon a message rec'd from him to me today.

Thanks in advance Afshin and Neil for organizing and planning.

When we purchased a major mortgage and banking business unit for approx. 1.2-billion, we were left with lots of real-estate in a working persons' city (not a resort/retirement city like SB).

Another factor is the high-cost to do business in California (Calif. highest in workman's comp, but Florida is 2nd highest; no state income-tax in FL), and the high-cost of real-estate/homes esp. in Santa Barbara.

The tax savings to the company and its shareholders is projected to cover the re-location of the company HQ's within one year.

More importantly, they made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

Oh, one non-smoking room would be good too (to go with that covered parking)!

tks-fad

FWIW, in my previous job, I had to go to Morro Bay twice per year, and stayed in the same hotel everytime.

It is near the downtown / restaurant / trendy area of Morro Bay, and has a parking garage, i.e., completely covered parking. It is a large hotel, maybe the largest in the entire city.

I don't remember the name, but I know it's there.

I've just made reservations at the Motel 6 for Sat evening to ensure "back up lodging"

>>> in the event Mike is unable to secure us at least 3 rooms w/ covered parking (non smoking).

I've learned that it is the tourist season in Morro Bay and some of these hotels are requiring a 2 night minimum stay- - hence I made the Motel 6 reservations now

I'm planning on an early Sat AM departure from the South Bay Area and will most likely be in the redesvous spot prior to 2pm...anyone else arriving prior to 2pm?- - perhaps we can do lunch...

Let me know

Hey Fad,

I can meet up with you for lunch. I am going to be in the LA area starting Wednesday night. I will be paying Bergwerks a visit either Thursday or Friday, and then Saturday it is just meeting up with you guys.

Can someone detail out to me the exact meeting time and place. This thread is way too long.

If I can make it I will probably be arriving around the same time you do, lunch sounds great.

Maybe after lunch we can clean up the cars, my detailing supplies will be going with..:D ;)

Greetings- lunch plans!

Shanta- initial meeting place map is on page 4 of this long thread-I believe that the town "Templeton, CA" is where our group GTG drive commences- - I must review Neil's post in more detail to determine exactly where in Templeton we are supposed to all meet.

Shanta, Scott, Placo1 - "Lunch"!

Perhaps we can meet up at "Big Momma's"
730 South Main Street, Templeton, CA.
(disclaimer: I have not the slightest idea about the quality of food at Big Momma's- but we can meet there and decide)

...oh- please correct me if I'm mistaken about the city of Templeton being our initial group GTG spot...Neil's map appears to be cut off and I extrapolated "Templeton" out of "Temple" ,,,

Mike- don't forget to be super nice- nice to your X- - bring her a cake or something so we can hook up 3 non smoking rooms with covered parking group AAA discount/ AARP discount, Lions Club, Donut Shop Owners Assoc of America discount etc....only the best hospitality Morro Bay can show us!

Ok here's the down-low ..or is it the low down...argh.

I went to Morro Bay tonight at 10pm. Yep that late. I was busy all day, but I kept my word, drove the 60 miles (to and back) and got some good news for you guys!

There are two hotels with covered parking. The nicer one is "La Serena Inn." The other is "Blue Sail inn."

They were closed when I got there so you'll have to call up to make reservations:

La Serena Inn
990 Morro Ave.
Morro Bay, Ca. 93442

Voice: (805) 772-5665, (800) 248-1511
Website (http://www.laserenainn.com/home2.htm)

Blue Sail Inn
851 Market ave.
Morro Bay, Ca. 93442

Phone: 1-888-337-0707

Directions:
We are 14 miles north of San Luis Obispo Ca. just off Highway 1. Take Highway 1 north to the Morro Bay Blvd. exit. Go west until you come to a T. At the T go right and you will be in-between our two buildings. The office is on your left just a half block

Website (http://www.bluesailinn.com/ )

Both had VACANCY signs on.

Oh and as far as doing something in MB...well it's kinda dead there. GOtta roll down to San Luis Obispo (13 miles away) for some nice bar/pub. But it's a college town, so you know how it goes. But then again, most people will be gone for the summer so it may not be too bad. Lotsa tourists :)

Thanks so much for ID'ing the covered parking lodging prospects... (only 60 miles drive round trip??? that's nothing for you...don't you do the SLO to Los Angeles drive every weekend??:D )

...I was under the impression that you were going to look up your X and clear us for 3 non-smoking suites???

I called the La Serena last week- vacancy but they want 2 night minimum. La Serena has sister hotel with covered parking- called that one too= 2 night minimum.

I called Blue Sail last week- no vacancy Sat 6/28.

Scott, Shanta, Tom....apppears that a group 500e500 overnighter at the Motel 6 is in order.

Mike bring out the car show tent and arrange for 24/7 armed security for me please.

Placo1- I will have my wife with me whom helps me to be a good citizen (nothing above 80mph)

Thanks Doc really appreciate the help.

I just called both places and here's the "Low Down":D

La Sarena has rooms available and they are going for $129/Night with a two night minimum!:( They won't consider changing their policy until the day before when they're sure the rooms won't fill.

The Blue Sail is completely booked that weekend, they HAD rooms available for $80 - $100/Night with no two night minimum. Oh well. BTW they have a waiting list already too.:(

What do you guys think of changing the stayover location to SLO rather than Morro Bay? I'm sure Doc knows which hotels have covered parking and his point about their being more pubs to sit and talk are well taken. My goal was to find a hotel within walking distance of a pub (I'm not a big fan of drinking and driving:rolleyes: ). and I figured we wouldn't be driving at night anyways.....unless of course we want to embarass the locals kids in their honda's and toyota's:D

What does everyone think?

BTW I am going, confirmed it last night.:)

For those that have not booked a room at Motel 6, WE HAVE A PROBLEM! I just called to make reservations and they are booked:( . Is Morro Bay that popular?

So how many were lucky enough to get a room and how many are still looking?

-fad
06-13-2003, 12:35 PM
I have room reservation at Motel 6- Morro Bay and most likely Neil may have one too since this was his suggestion.

fyi- There are plenty of 'discounted' rooms at nearby (to Motel 6) Morro Bay lodging establishments around the $100-$175/night range.

If we are going to consider changing overnight lodging locale from Morro Bay to SLO- please ensure in the research that we can all have acccomodations ...otherwise it would appear to make sense NOT to change up the Morro Bay (lodging city) location.

Placo1- are you researching Sat. evening dinner/ entertainment activities for us? (this is our only night to R&R)

Why aren't more Los Angeles 500e500 owners joining us???? We can all meet for breakfast on Sunday morning!

best regards

I'm looking good to come up Sunday morning from LA. I'll keep following the thread and when the lodging bookings settle down, hopefully we can agree on a rendezvous breakfast Sunday morning. I'm happy to leave very early (5 or 6am) - the drive would be more fun and I'm an early riser anyway. I guess that would put me in town around 8:30-9:30 Sunday morning. Any others care to convoy up from LA?

So far the following have said they're going:
1. Neil
2. Scott
3. Shanta
4. Carl

Well crap.

Fad my ex's hotel, which I drove by yesterday, doesn't have covered parking. I Thought it did. So that's outta the question.

Morro Bay is nice and all, but that's dead town at night.
As for a covered parking in SLO, I don't remember any, BUT, there are a couple hotels that just openend up and I THINK i spotted one or two parking garages there. I'll check today.

There's also Pismo Beach, but it's tourist central there, and I wouldn't be surprised that they're all booked up. I'll check for you guys for rooms (how many rooms????) for the night of the 6/28.

I think covered parking may not be in our collective future on this GTG. That being the case, we'll simply need to get our 500e gang into good quality affordable rooms.

since -fad and Neil are already booked & confirmed in Morro Bay...let's see if we can all get booked in Morro Bay- there are vacancies at other close by accomodations close to the Motel 6.... (at least we can all stay close to each other)...suggest pulling Yahoo Maps to the address of the Motel 6- - then click on "nearby businesses/ hotels"

RE: "Morro Bay deadtown at night "
Note to Mike: Whereever we are- - that certainly is where the action will be!;)

fyi- BobC may join us from Marin, CA. He will check in with us next week. Perhaps a room for him and his wife/ family may be sought as well.

Mike

Please do check for other places, I just called every hotel in Morro Bay and either they have a 2 Night Minimum or are booked. Only one Hotel has 1 Room Left and price is $120.

At this point unless there is a nearby town I have a feelilng our last resort will be SLO.

Neil, fad would you object to changing reservations if we found something in SLO or nearby town?

fad,

Regarding the Dinner I will search for this as soon as we've narrowed down where we'll be staying. As far as breakfast I was hoping Neil could chime in since he's been there. Brunch would be nice so that those traveling from LA and Norcal on Sunday can join us.

As far as the drive Neil has already made some great suggestions so I thought we would take that route. I guess the only question now is if we should do the drive Saturday afternoon or Sunday early AM? I'm thinking early AM is better and then head off to brunch. What do you guys/gals think?

I would favor Morro Bay location for the coastal aesthetics vs. SLO

Placo1- out of the 33 hotels in Morro Bay only one with a 1 nighter vacancy?

Here's a thought: you may wish to see if booking 5 rooms as a group can get you in the door @ $100/night (effectively neutralizing the 2 nighter minimum).

You will need to speak to the manager directly to obtain this consideration and must specifically ask for it- - at the covered-parking available hotels. Actually this is more of a sales job than acquiring hotel rooms...

You may add that the 5 hotel guests are an esteemed group business persons with very rare and valuable MB automobiles that would surely raise the profile of the covered parking and may be our annual official GTG hotel in Central CA:D

good luck!

LOL fad sounds like your the man for the job!:D

Actually I did make a half hearted attempt of persuading them to make it a one night minimum if I booked five rooms but I obviously didn't get too far.

Hmm maybe it's time to turn on the charm and hopefully a female attendant willl answer;) :D . That said I will give it one more try and see what happens.

Yahoo only listed 8 Hotels in Morro Bay, where did you get 33 from? How big was your search area? I hope your not thinking I'm going to stay in a hourly rate motel.:D :p Seriously can you put up a link if you've found more in the immediate area.

Ok here's what I done:

I found the newest built place here in San Luis Obispo. It's off Monterey street which is pretty nice.

I made reservations for 3 rooms, King bed..or was it Queen..whichever was bigger I got. Regular PRice $179 a night, I got it down to $159 a night.

Website www.lamplighterinn.com
Phone 1-866-SLO-REST

Address: 1604 Monterey St.
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

Walking distance from the cool downtown area.

They have limited covered parking, but I made the request that they corner off an area for at least 3 cars.

If more of you want in on it, call them up.
When calling tell them that you are here for the Mercedes Shop gathering so they give you the discount.

And for those I made the reservations for (Shanta, Iron Chef Fad, and Placo) all you have to do is confirm these rooms via phone before Tuesday.
