I have a 1999 ML, there are some rust on the ladder frame especially around weld points. Should I have the underbody and frame sprayed with oil or a little bit of rust dosen't hurt on the frame.

Ken itb76 04-08-2003, 11:31 PM A little rust on the frame of any automobile, particularly up North where road salt is used, is common. It is somewhat disconcerting, especially if you plan on keeping it for a long time (over 10 years). Oil would keep the rust in check, but seems to me it would pick up dirt and deteriorate any rubber bits it gets sprayed on. I've had good luck with a product from Eastwood Co. they call "rust encapsulating paint". Eastwood (www.eastwoodco.com) specializes in products for restoration of older cars. You brush it on, or thin it down and spray it. I can't imagine a '99 would have enough rust on it to warrant sandblasting anything, so the paint may be the way to go. If you're not going to keep it 10+ years you probably don't need to worry about it. Lenny Frank X. Morris 04-09-2003, 01:16 AM Howdy LamK, Try POR 15. You can find it on the web. I found out about it from some off-road guys in Europe. tabo 04-12-2003, 01:51 AM I will try to remove the dust and spray some undercoating in a can . . just make sure you don't spray the exhaust pipes... |
