I am hoping someone can offer some advice on a BMW question. I am looking at a 1994 BMW 325iC with a transmission that seems to slip, particularly when first put into reverse.
It could be just a fluid level problem, but I don't "quite" own this car yet, so can't really check it out.
If anybody is familiar with this problem, or has some ideas what it could be, and how much to repair it, that could go a LONG way to determining my commitment to this car.

Before you buy have an independent mechanic check the vehicle out. Pick one who has the training and expertise to fully examine the car. If the seller is honest they should have no problem with you having the car independently inspected. It may cost you some money to find out that isn't the car for you but it can be quite small change compared to finding out later...

What leads you to believe the tranny is slipping? Beemer's have a rather low ratio for the reverse gearset. How are the forward speeds? Any repair on auto trans can be expensive if it goes beyond a simple pressure test and a band adjustment. Is it a Getrag or ZF auto?, 3 speed or 4 speed. Have you driven the car at any great length?? How does it go thru the gears under normal driving conditions??

When first putting it in reverse, it takes about 2 seconds until the transmission seems to engage. It then backs up fine.
Also, upon acceleration, the RPMs "flare" up a bit during gear changes.
This is the GM trans that you cannot check the level on from above the car, so my thought is that the trans has never been serviced.
The obvious question is why would I want THIS car, and the answer is my wife loves it (it's for her) and the price is RIGHT.
Anyway, at this point the seller has agreed to have the trans serviced, so we will see where it goes from here.

As it turns out, the seller has agreed to have the transmission rebuilt (on his dime!), so it looks like "this" problem will be solved.
I can't wait to get it home and delve into all it's other as-of-yet unknown problems.<BG>
